How are you changing the world?

While walking the dog earlier today, I found myself wondering about the whole meaning of life thing. My inbox has had more than a few sad messages from afar this week, reminders that this gift we've all been given is both fleeting and finite. It made me think.

And as my mind wandered back, I was reminded of the late Steve Jobs, and his well-documented desire to leave a dent in the universe. His dent is an obvious one, but what of the rest of us? What are we - individually and collectively - doing to change the world? How are we leaving it a better place than when we first got here? I'd love to hear your thoughts...

I have taught my adult kids to be open, honest, to try things that they are interested in- even if its out of the norm... to be genuine w/others... Also, I am not repeating some of the views that my parents have- some that I do not agree on- some prejudicial views that are unfair.. The prejudice they have is due to how they were brought up, the time they were brought up in... Its all about fear and ignorance... My 'kids' have a sensitivity that would amaze anyone.. Compassion and understanding is what they will pass on to others...

I think a dent in the universe could be very very small...but it could change the whole universe. Who knows how wide and far the concentric circles go when we throw in that stone?

Absolutely nothing tombstone worthy so far here.
I guess I'm hoping someone on their deathbed will whisper the secret to me before they go. I'll keep you posted.

Please share the good stuff if you find it. :-)

I am a school teacher. For over 2 decades, I have reached into the future daily. I do nothing as dramatic as what Steve Jobs did, but every single day -- in the face of bullying media and parents -- I teach kids this skills they need in order to do things as great as what Mr. Jobs did, or perhaps even better.

I don't think we need to do much more to change the world than to be kind. Every act of kindness pays itself forward, a multiplicity that feeds on itself. The kid you give fifty cents in the Walmart line because he's short is going to remember that...and who knows how much bigger his forward act might be?

I believe that beauty can save the world. Whether a beautiful idea or a beautiful image or a beautiful bridge. So I try to find the beauty, and give some beauty. Does it make a difference? I don't know, but it is what I can do.

I don't believe it's just about the biggest awards, or innovations but more the gentle footprints we leave where you least expect to find them. If you want the best, honest answer to this whole life thing, it's defined prefectly in the film, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, it's quite a soul-opener.....it's amazing in this grand life how one small factor can change so many things for the better.....
