Rusty yellow stairs

On the far side of the beach, overlooking the harbour, a couple of hulking oil tanks provide fuel for the economy that drives this lakeside town.

They used to be painted with lovely murals depicting ships that long ago sailed these waters. They’re a much more sober shade of black now, the yellow staircases that cling to them rusting slowly under the summer sun.

The third tank was demolished years ago, its weedy footprint still scarring the ground it stood on.

For reasons I can’t explain, I want to remember them.

Maybe it’s because no one else ever bothers to. Maybe I figure if I step outside the crowded beach for a bit, I’ll find scenes and stories that would otherwise never be shared.

Maybe I want to imagine who has climbed these precarious steps. Maybe I’ve wondered what they might have thought as they looked over a shoreline filled with people whose focus was understandably elsewhere.

Not everyone or everything lives in the limelight. Their stories still matter to someone.
