The Internet is chock full of resources that allow you to waste as much time as you've got - and often quite a bit more.
Sometimes, we come across sites that are actually useful. The Google Maps Pedometer (also known as the Gmaps Pedometer) qualifies. Not sure how many miles that walk around the block is? Use this app - built using the Google Maps API, which itself forms the basis of the nascent Google Maps/Google Local service - to figure it out.
It's frighteningly addictive.
Your turn: Google Maps has quickly become a universally accepted basis for developing rich geographic applications. What Gmaps-based sites have you come across in your travels? I hope you'll share some links and thoughts in a comment.

I don't really have any Map Sites that I know, excepot Mapquest and I find their directions often 'scratch your head in wonder'...Sometimes they give you a strange turn when it is not needed....
I am going to go to the one you suggested...
I love Google Images...So much good stuff there!
I love Google. I love Google Earth. When my husband travels, my son and I take a bird's eye gander at wherever Daddy has gone. We've also looked in on some amazing places in the world that we may never get to see first hand - pyramids, Great Walls, towers of all sorts.
I think I'll be using this new Pedometer feature! How awesome is that!
I wondered what this map was all about. I saw a man using it on the airplane coming home from a trip I went on. I was fascinated by it. Now I know where to go to check it out. I agree the pedometer is great.
OK, I just spent 20 minutes and I couldn't make it work. Today is not a good technology day for me. I can't get my DVD recorder to burn a DVD that can play on another player. Ugh. I give up.
But it looked like fun and I found my street!
Oh great, something else on the Internet to help me waste my valuable time!
I don't know of any map sites but Google maps and google earth has my area labeled wrong. Its just far from accurate..
I've come across none, though it's fun to check out the neighborhoods some of my out of town friends live in. I'm a die-hard Rand-McNally-ite.

Hi Carmi! I must now familiarize myself with this Google maps pedometer.
I've actually been to your site once before, but now I'm leaving a comment because (drum roll please) Michele sent me. :)
Wow, an actual, real use for the internet! Go figure.
Hi Carmi! Visiting from Michele's again!
I particularly enjoy the satellite option on google maps. Sometimes, you just need to "see" where you're going!
Like others I *heart* Google Earth. It is so amazing to be able to pinpoint your home and also your sister's who lives on the other side of the planet! ANd have you checked out the pyramids, mt.everest etc., on it? Amazing.
Here in Melbourne I am always using whereis.com.au for my maps. It also navigates a direct route for you and approx. how long it should take. Gotta love that.

I don't do the online maps. I like to hold them in my hand. But it's good to know it's there. Hello from michle's.
My bf and I both are fans of computer maps. We even took a lap top and gps with us on our road trip to Nashville, TN over the Canadian Thanksgiving Weekend! I was very impressed.

Carmi: I confess due to your BLOG. I ama back to the basics guy. The route I "Power Walk" is technically 3.7 miles but I add on to make it 5. I know this because i used my cars odometer to map it out! Good old fashioned analog stuff!
This will be right up everyone's alley... Its a great way to pass some time at work when no one is looking
