This is another one of those pictures that just begs the mind to wonder what it is. One of the things I love about photography is its selectiveness: when I compose an image, I can choose to include or exclude whatever context may be surrounding the scene. This seemingly simple decision can totally influence the viewing experience.
It also keeps some folks up at night after experiencing my bizarre world view. But that's a story for another day.
Your turn: A 2-parter:
- What do you think this is?
- What came to mind immediately after you first saw this image?

Wet cement is what came to mind...I think that's what it might be.
Great photos! Neat site.
Here from Michele's.
hmmm.
1. tasty chocolate ice cream
2. it doesn't look like sand
3. i'm gonna stick with my first choice, ice cream.
I bought tasty chocolate ice cream today too!!!

Kinda looks like a satilite view of the earth ..seeing a cloud formation..god knows have been having some of those lately lol...
My other thought was a closeup of icecream in the carton.
Michele sent me.
My first thought was wet sand at the beach......
But after looking at it, I think it might be lint from the dryer??
Am I right??
Michele sent me to see you this time. (but thanks for the sweet comments on my blog!)
Michele sent me back........you are going to eventually tell us what it is, right??
Absolutely, Tracie. When I put up my next entry, I'll drop a comment in here with the answer. Until then, I'll let everyone speculate. It's immensely enjoyable to see what people think!
My first thought was mold, or dust up close. On second thought, I think it's ice cream.
I'd say it's a close up of a used air conditioner filter or you just cleaned out your vacuum cleaner.
My first thought was ice cream too.
Ice cream or buttercream frosting. I want to spread it on something.
Very interesting.
It almost looks like a close-up of something that you would find in a vacuum bag. My first thought was dryer lint.
It looks like dryer crud to me.
I saw it and went eewwwwwww
Ice cream!!!
looks like dryer lint
It looks like ice cream.
My first impression is that it looks soft and fluffy... and I just wanted to roll around in it.
I'm with AverageMom. At first I thought it was dust, like when I empty the drum from the vacuum cleaner. But then upon closer inspection, it looks a lot like ice cream. Perhaps a blueberry flavour or something.
My very first thought was dryer lint, then I thought wet sand but then I read the other's comments and I have to agree - ice cream.
Carmi, that looked (at first glance) like snow and frost on cedar branches. Or it could be ice cream in the container after some has been removed.
Okay, I too thought it might be an oddly-colored chocolate ice cream, until I spied a small chunk of what appears to be asphalt in the upper left. So:
- really dirty, fluffed-up snow?
- street cleansing paste (if there is such a thing!)?
- hm, perhaps street resurfacing compound?
Or then again, maybe somebody dropped some oddly-colored, purplish-brown ice cream on the road!
Your pictoral mind-twisters are always interesting mental fodder.
i thought it was dryer lint... then i enlarged it and thought it looked like a dark raspberry ice cream... but i know it's not cause i didnt see anything that looked like it was melting or cold etc... so i dont know... going to read the other comments now too cause i didnt want to read them first and distort my thoughts!
You guys are the greatest guessers. I love reading your myriad perspectives on what is, admittedly, the work of an overly tired words-and-images guy.
The short answer is this is ice cream.
The remaining question is: what flavor is it? I suspect no one will be able to guess (but I'll fess up later on Sunday, so come back to the comment stream for more.)
looks like blueberry ice cream.
first thinkg that came to mind was a sponge
I thought it was dust. I'm guessing it is blueberry flavor.
I think it's ice cream!!!
Yummy yummy yum yum!!!
Michele sent me.
I came back to see what it was, Carmi.
I have a new post on children's books tonight - you might be interested.
1) The foam used in floral arrangments. The damp green stuff that's sort of like soaked clay, but not.
2) Cool water to soothe my aching feet, because I wish I could rest them in the above-mentioned foam.
ah carmi, i love visitng you!
the first thought i had was that it looked amazing like the mean dust bunnie under my couch, but on closer viewing it looks kind of like chocolate icecream in the bin at the ice cream shop... in black and white.
michele sent me.
Black Cherry? Wild cherry? Home made berry?
It's gotta have a berry in it right?
Firstly, rock and then maybe some kind of torn insulation batting, but then I remembered your love of icecream and it resolved quickly.
lovely Carmi.
here via Michele's today.
xx
dang... i was way off i thought it resembled ice cream but not actually looked like ice cream... wow!
so.. i think it's black raspberry ice cream!
Children.
The flavor is children.
...
Or boysenberry.
Ice Cream?? Really??
I couldn't even begin to think what flavor it is!
Since I am colour blind I can not really discern the colour so I will just go with chocolate because it's my fav lol
(ps..and yes I am a woman with colour blindness, it is very rare..and we do see colour, just not like everyone else)
Immediately, I saw a satellite aerial shot of a forest. Then I thought it was a super-examined cleaning sponge. Maybe a filter.
Firstly - Dark Cement...
Then i thought about it.
and i was hungry...
and i finally decided, Muffin Mixture... YUMMO!!!
hmmm and because i JUST then decided to read the comments, and its Ice-Cream - i want to say..
Cappucino-Chocolate... Or Moccacino.
Or along those lines...
I want a coffee now...
Hope your weekend was smashing Carmi! :D *hugs*
Looks like cookie dough but I immediately thought of insulation.
Can you tell I am in the middle of home remodeling. :)
