Where I talk about Alberta separatism and foreign influencer meddling

Why are influencers halfway around the world meddling in the Alberta separation debate? And why is Facebook just letting it happen? Why should Canadians be concerned? And what should they do next?

The answers might surprise you. I’ll explain Tuesday morning as I join CBC Radio stations across Canada.

Returning to The Suburban

A long, long time ago, I wrote for a local weekly newspaper while pursuing my journalism degree.

The paper was - and still is - known as The Suburban, and its original founders managed to craft a feisty little paper that made a difference in the communities it served.

Decades later, it's a very different place, but it's still kicking. Their longtime columnist, Mike Cohen, was gracious enough to interview me for his podcast, and we had a lovely time catching up. Enjoy!

Where I talk about social media trials on CBC Radio

With a groundbreaking trial now underway in LA, the future of social media companies like Meta, TikTok, YouTube, and Snap hangs in the balance amid a torrent of lawsuits alleging their platforms are harming kids' mental health.

I'll be speaking with CBC Radio stations across the country tomorrow (Wednesday) morning. The mic's red light goes on at 5:30 a.m. ET: hope you can tune in.

(The strange-looking link below leads to CBC's main Listen page. Shhh, no one tell Meta it's a sneaky way to get Canadian media content posted here.)

Coming up: Iran goes dark

As Iran tightens the electronic noose around its citizens to shield itself from global view, the full extent of this unprecedented digital blockade is becoming terrifyingly apparent. I'll be joining CBC Radio stations across the country starting at 3:00 p.m. Eastern to discuss what this all means, and the lessons we might want to apply closer to home.

Talking about Iranian cyberthreats on the CBC

Now that the dust has settled from the U.S. stealth bomber attack on the Iranian government's nuclear facilities, the FBI, NSA and other top agencies are warning of targeted attacks on critical infrastructure.

It is as frightening as it sounds - imagine a threat actor remotely controlling your town's water supply or shutting off the electrical grid. And since the internet knows no borders, Canadians are also at risk.

I'll be joining CBC Radio stations across the country this afternoon to explain why this is so worrisome, and what we should be doing to address the risk.

Talking about Canada's AI gap on the CBC

New research from KPMG shows Canada ranks 44th out of 47 countries in #AI literacy.

I'll be discussing Canada's next AI moves with CBC Radio stations across the country Friday morning. Hope you can tune in!

Talking about TikTok on the CBC

The clock continues to tick on TikTok after Donald Trump issued a second 75-day extension to sell itself to an American buyer or be subject to shutdown. It may feel familiar, but with a global trade war now raging, the app has become a geopolitical pawn.

I’m joining CBC Radio stations from coast to coast to coast this morning to discuss how, why, and what’s next.

Talking about Skype with the CBC

Following Microsoft's announcement that Skype will go dark on May 5, 2025, it's safe to say an era in digital communications is drawing to a close. But what does it all mean? And what should we all be taking away from this milestone in tech history?

I'll be joining CBC Radio stations across the country later today - between 3:00 and 7:30 p.m. Eastern - to shine the light on a technology many of us will miss when it's gone.

Where I talk about Instagram and teens

So Instagram has announced the rollout of Teen Accounts designed to keep teens safe(r) and give parents more control over their online experiences.

They even promise to catch cheaters who claim to be 18…but aren’t.

But is it enough? Or is it too little, too late? How should parents and kids prepare themselves? And should we be trusting Meta at all?

I’ll be speaking with CBC Radio stations across Canada on Wednesday morning, and hope you get to listen in.
