Ride even when it's miserable

Pause for reflection
London, ON
October 2021
This photo originally shared on Instagram

Sunday dawns grey, wet, and miserable, which threatens to throw a wrench into my elaborate plan to ride my bike.

In the grand scheme of things, a simple bike ride doesn’t really rank. In the cold light of a planet in crisis, one person pedalling through the neighbourhood is as trivial as it sounds.

Yet I still stare out the rain-flecked window and ponder my next move. I’m not yet willing to give in to Mother Nature.

So tea gets made, bananas get eaten, water bottles get filled and the bike gets prepped. Soon enough, I pedal off, the slick leaves on the damp streets singing their seasonal song as my tires roll over them.

It takes a few kilometres to find my rhythm, but by the time I’m feeling my groove, the mist gets pushed out by a growing wind, the skies brighten ever so slightly, and the puddles begin to evaporate. It isn’t glorious, but as October looms, it’s good enough.

We don’t have many days like this left this year, and since I lack the iron stomach to ride on snow and ice, I have to push to get out there now, even when it’s wet and gross and it would be just as easy to stand down for the day.

It’s a lesson in compromise, an acceptance that conditions for cycling - like conditions for anything else - are always subject to countless forces well beyond our control, and as a result will never be as ideal as we’d like.

But still we get ourselves outside into the mist, where the dampness soaks through and makes us question why we’re here.

But that very discomfort is probably the thing that makes it so worthwhile. It’s like experiencing the darkness first so we can particularly appreciate the light.

Or so I convince myself as I lean hard into the next turn and smile madly at the ensuing g-forces.

This life thing. Not always comfortable. But staying inside and avoiding it seems like such a lost opportunity.

So we ride anyway.

A hurricane covers the continent

Lines of salmon and pink

September 2024
This photo originally shared on Instagram

A giant storm from far away painted soft salmon lines in the sky last night.

It’s difficult to believe that something capable of crafting such unique magic in the skies is just as capable of destroying lives across a dozen states to the south of us.

It’s an achingly real display of the duality of nature, a sad reminder that we’re all connected somehow, and we’re all at the mercy of whatever blows in from afar.

Do you see the dinosaurs in the sky?

Leapers, maybe
London, ON
September 2024
This photo originally shared on Instagram

Stand on the ground long enough and stare into the sky and we’re bound to eventually see something in the clouds.

Or not.

I may have seen galloping dinosaurs on this particularly fetching evening last week, but my imagination might have just as likely been playing games with me. Hard to tell.

Countless times, I’ll pick up my camera and head out, only to arrive at my favourite big sky viewing spot and see that the clouds have shifted and the show is over.

I return home with no photos, or maybe I took a few boring ones - which will never be shared.

When I first started these weird photo wanders, I’d be disappointed. I felt I had wasted my time, strived for something and failed to bring it home.

I’ve evolved my thinking in the years since, because no effort is ever a waste. Even a boring sky is better than the alternative of no sky at all. The time spent in search of that elusive something is always time well spent, even if that something turns out to be a nothing.

Because even nothings are something. Something good, even.

And what matters isn’t necessarily what we may or may not have seen, but the fact that we looked up at all and tried to see it in the first place.

Soon enough the green canopy that protects the forest will turn all sorts of colours before disappearing entirely, leaving the floor open to whatever blanket winter chooses to lay down.

So we pause amid the quiet to take in the lush shades.

For all of this, like all of us, is merely temporary.

The trees that bend but do not break

Ready for anything
Deerfield Beach, FL
February 2023
This photo originally shared on Instagram

As I write this, Tropical Storm Helene is churning through the Gulf of Mexico, and is projected to make landfall late Thursday as a hurricane somewhere on Florida’s Gulf Coast.

I took this photo last year not far from there, beside a beach, the palm trees swaying in the light breeze of a typical sunny afternoon overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.

I stared at those trees for a while, admiring their ability to gently absorb the energy from the sky. And when the winds picked up, they still stood their ground, whispering just a little louder as they danced high above the ground.

They’re built for it, these trees. They take whatever gets thrown their way. They bend, but they do not break.

I think of friends and family now preparing for the storm’s arrival, wondering what the sky might bring next and hoping they’ve done enough. Anyone with a connection to this corner of the planet understandably worries about those now in the storm’s path.

I hope at some point the folks on the ground look to the palm trees and realize that they, too, just like the trees, are built for this. They’re stronger than they look, and they’ll bend into whatever blows their way, then bend back after the storm has passed.

It’s what humans do, whether storms come from the sky, or from some other place.

15 years...

Walking with his Zaydie
Laval, QC
August 2006
This photo originally shared on Instagram

My dad died 15 years ago yesterday. All day, I wrestled with whether or not I should write about it. Because if I write about every chronologically significant moment in my or my family’s history, it could easily become the only thing I ever share here.

But I also didn’t want to look back and wish I had had the opportunity to say something, but didn’t. So here we are.

Of my and my wife’s parents, his loss was our first, and as we navigated the days, weeks, and months that followed in what seemed like a fog, we at least had the benefit of our surviving parents and in-laws to lean on.

15 years on, the landscape is decidedly more stark. Debbie’s parents are no longer with us, and the passage of time has cruelly picked off even more branches of our family tree beyond that central trunk. We used to look to others for answers, but these days, all eyes seem to look to us. Now it feels like we’re the adults in the room.

I’d like to think my father was happy with what he accomplished and with what he left behind. I often look at this photo of him walking our son, Noah, then aged 6, near their place north of Montreal. Despite the rushed composition and blown highlights, it’s one of my favourite photos.

My dad lived long enough to see his grandchildren come into the world, and to thrive. They carry those memories forward as they establish themselves in their own life’s journeys. That’s a blessing in its own right, isn’t it?

In the day-to-day, he surrounded himself with friends, packed his calendar with adventures near and far, and always seemed to find his way into the middle of the limelight. He was easy to find in a crowded room. More importantly, he loved my mom.

Was he perfect? Far from it. But no one ever is, anyway, and in his perfectly well-intentioned imperfection, he established a pretty reasonable template for me to build from.

After 15 years, I remain thankful to have had him for as long as we did, and hope I’m not the only one thinking of him and churning the full spectrum of memories as we mark another year in a progression that only moves one direction. Away.

Calli the Wonderschnauzer doesn’t much like being alone, and will often follow us through the house, then sit and stare at us, seemingly looking through our soul.

She instinctively knows when the camera comes out, and is a delightfully cooperative little model as I look for new ways to collect pixels of her.

I talk to her as I compose, and she’s pretty good at giving me her best side when she’s in just the right mood.

I probably take entirely too many pictures of her, but I keep coming back to shoots like this because as much as I enjoy the outcomes, I cherish the quiet disconnected moments with her even more.

It’s good for my mental health. Probably Calli’s, too.

Weird, I know.

The magic of cooking oil and light

Soft glow in a rarely seen place
London, ON
September 2024
This photo originally shared on Instagram

The scene: we’re on a date in the grocery store.

That’s no typo. Dates can happen in a grocery store. Or any other place. Doesn’t have to be extraordinary. Because the ordinary is extraordinary. She is, too.

I’ve been tasked with piloting the cart. Which I’m doing rather inelegantly because, as usual, I’ve picked the loser cart, the one with janky wheels that pull it persistently to the right and sound like an angry squirrel.

And since I’m not really a decent cart driver to begin with, I run into difficulty while trying to avoid a speedwalking octogenarian and end up bumping it into the shelf just below the cooking oil section. Canola/olive oil bottles topple everywhere. It’s a culinary murder scene.

So as the speedwalking grandma disappears past the end caps filled with off-brand artisanal honey, I do my best store employee impression and attempt to reposition the bottles I’ve knocked over.

I stick my head into the shelving because, you know, I’m an idiot. And in doing so, I notice the lovely light being cast through the bottles facing the aisle.

So I take a stupid picture because why not? I don’t think speedwalking grandma is coming back, and I have to find some way, any way, to remember the moment when I found something remarkable in an ordinary place.

Remember what we said earlier about ordinary?

Soon enough I rejoin my lovely wife and we head for the checkout. The story of my cooking oil misadventure will be a fun one to share on the way home.

End scene.

First light is the best light

Where I get a new way to see her
London, ON
September 2024
This photo originally shared on Instagram

The old smartphone finally crashed and burned - seriously, I kill my devices - so it was time to switch things up.

New smartphone day also means new camera day, and for reasons I can’t fully explain, that first photo is an important one.

It’s called first light, and if I understand it correctly, photographers have borrowed the concept from astronomers, who use it to describe the first scene viewed through a new telescope.

In my world, that first picture taken with a new camera has to have some kind of meaning. And there’s no one who has more meaning to me than this lovely human.

She’s also the only person I know who puts up with my quirks, and patiently poses for the camera while I stick it in her face yet again.

I’m hoping this new lens of mine helps me see and share all sorts of beauty in the years to come. But none of it will be as resonant as she is.

One jet in a big sky

Orange you glad you looked up?
London, ON
August 2024
This photo originally shared on Instagram

High in the sky where the sun’s last rays fight to be seen before everything goes dark, a commercial jet leaves a contrail behind as it tries and fails to stay in the light.

I stand far below and wonder if anyone on-board is looking out the window. Are they taking in the wonder, too?

I’d like to think they are. Maybe they’re even shooting the same scene through time-worn plastic windows. I hope they know they’re not alone.

Shades up. Eyes wide open. Curiosity engaged. We see a lot more moments like this when we do. We may even connect - silently - with total strangers far away who feel the same way.

Ice cream architecture

Where's my ruler?
St. Thomas, ON
September 2024
This photo originally shared on Instagram

At first glance, it seems like little more than a concrete block building, an ordinary example of ordinary architecture that probably shouldn’t be worth a first look, let alone a second one.

But here’s the funny thing about the ordinary: it isn’t ordinary at all. Nothing is.

Because even the ordinary has its own story. Or more likely lots of stories.

And we do ourselves good when we take the time to learn what those stories might be.

So we look, read, ask, listen, whatever it takes to peel back the blank layers and feel the knowledge, the history, the spirit that makes everything and anything and anyone worthy of having its story told.

In this case, it’s where an iconic ice cream company has been making memories for thousands for decades.

Not even remotely ordinary.

Officially she’s known as the C-17 Globemaster III, but unofficially she’s called Moose. And standing in her shadow it becomes clear why.

She’s beautiful, just not in the conventional way. If beauty means carrying anything, anywhere, safely, and bringing her crew home from unmentionable corners of the planet, then she may very well be the most beautiful flying machine ever built.

Let’s go with that. And let’s assume her lessons of beauty apply to far more than things that fly.

Where I talk about Instagram and teens

So Instagram has announced the rollout of Teen Accounts designed to keep teens safe(r) and give parents more control over their online experiences.

They even promise to catch cheaters who claim to be 18…but aren’t.

But is it enough? Or is it too little, too late? How should parents and kids prepare themselves? And should we be trusting Meta at all?

I’ll be speaking with CBC Radio stations across Canada on Wednesday morning, and hope you get to listen in.

Bar code subway station

Take a load off
Toronto, ON
September 2024
This photo originally shared on Instagram

I no longer live in a city with a subway. So when I visit one lucky enough to have underground mass transit - like Toronto - I feel the need to record the experience.

The strategy on this particular trip is a simple one: tuck myself off to the side near the doors - but not in anyone’s way, because that would be un-Canadian - and when the crowds clear after the doors open, move quickly to dead middle and shoot out toward the platform.

There’s something weirdly poetic about benches in subways, sacred little spaces where strangers in between here and there seek temporary rest before continuing their journey.

Countless stories play out here in the overlooked shadows, tiny interruptions in an otherwise endless flow of humanity.

Older stations in Toronto’s network often sport intricate signage within the tiles, a visceral connection to their mid-century origins, and a reminder that time moves in only one direction.

I know places like this aren’t designed for pauses or introspection. Which makes images like this even more worth taking.

At least that’s what I tell myself as I dance around the subway car amid the bemused stares of strangers.

It feels cathartic to roll the bike slowly through the early morning air that blankets the neighbourhood, only to mash the pedals with abandon once I turn onto the arterial road that leads to the countryside.

Before long, the city gives way to endless fields of green, and all I hear is the wind in my ears. Nothing else matters beyond maintaining my pace for as long as my legs allow.

That, in a nutshell, is what an ideal Sunday morning looks like in my world. Just about the only way to top it would be to throw in some horses.

And on this morning, at least, they’re out grazing in the pasture as I head east into the sun. So nice of them, I think to myself, as I double back for a closer look.

Looks like we all needed a little pause before getting on with our day.

This photo originally shared on Instagram

Someone else in our family is celebrating a birthday today.

I didn’t know her on the day she was born, but still my life changed for the better with her arrival.

And as she marks the end of another year and the beginning of the next, I can’t help but think that the universe was smiling on us all when she first showed up.

She is the very centre of our family, the star around which we all move through our respective orbits, the place family and friends alike always seem to go when they need sanctuary, guidance, or a little bit of both.

Our kids know she’ll pick up the phone 24/7/365 - unless she’s already reached out to them first. She has a sense of family that can’t be described in words, and I’m in awe of her not only on her birthday, but every other day of the year.

Happy, happy birthday, my phenomenal Debbie - and thank you for making even the ordinary days worthy of celebration.

27 and counting...

In my mind’s eye, I’m still holding her for the first time, a munchkin who was so tiny that I wondered where the rest of her had gone.

If I close my eyes, I can still feel her squirming in my arms, her perfect little face an echo of her beautiful mom. I leaned in and listened to her first soft cries, a sweet voice that’s shaped the soundtrack of our family ever since.

We first met her 27 years ago today, and between then and now she’s grown into an accomplished, brilliantly creative, endlessly empathetic, limitlessly impressive young woman, the kind of daughter any parent would be proud to call theirs, the kind of person anyone would want to know, and be lucky enough to call a friend.

I wish I could explain how time seems to travel so quickly when your kids are rushing toward adulthood, but there aren’t enough words in the world to do it justice. All I really know is she’s made each of the ensuing 27 years indelibly memorable for all of use who’ve made the journey alongside her. Her stamp on our family was and is as indelible as her spirit.

Between her last birthday and this one, she’s graduated, started her dream job, and moved to Toronto to be with her bashert. A lot of milestones in a year for a girl I named Peanut the first time I saw her on a sonogram screen.

She doubtless already has plans for her next year, and we’re the blessed parents who get to watch and revel in where she goes and how she gets there.

Happy birthday, Peanut. They say the best is yet to come - and they’re indeed right, but only because you work so relentlessly hard to make the magic happen.

Teletubbies are baseball fans, too

And we'll root, root, root for the home team
Toronto, ON
September 2024
This photo originally shared on Instagram

In a world where terrorists fly airplanes into office towers, it’s quaint to think that whether a baseball team wins or loses is a significant thing for some.

It’s also quaint for an adult to attend one of those games with a tattered old tiny stuffie clipped onto the old camera bag. What’s the connection, then?

For me, it’s the simple freedom to hang out with my family and watch a game where kids get to grow up to throw a ball around a field for the entertainment of others. The government doesn’t impose laws around who gets to attend, what they may or may not wear, what they may or may not say in public, or even how many freaking hot dogs they may or may not eat.

It’s a sad irony that 23 years after an Afghani-based terrorist struck at the very core of the American financial system, that same country’s government continues to tighten the noose around women’s rights.

So we attend games and play with Po the Teletubby and chat idly with strangers and eat hot dogs simply because we can.

Because to not engage in these simple freedoms would suggest that we don’t appreciate all that we still have, or continue to push back against those who would take all of this away from us.

Jupiter comes to Earth

Colours of the almost night
London, ON
September 2024
This photo originally shared on Instagram

I’ve been going for late evening wanders with my camera again.

If the sky looks promising - some cloud, but not too much - I’ll hook Po the Teletubby up to the camera bag and head out to see what I can see.

It isn’t so much about the photography as it is about spending some quiet time alone doing nothing more than staring at the sky and trying to divine what may or may not happen next. It’s good exercise for the soul.

This time out, the photography turns out to be a bit of a bust. What looks like a precursor to some atmospheric theatrics when I first leave the house ends up fizzling into boringness in the time it takes me to walk the few blocks to my viewing spot beside a local park.

It happens. I get it. Doesn’t make me want to do this any less.

But as sunset time comes and goes, I stick around just in case something else pops into view. The sky is a wondrously complex thing, so you just never know.

To the west, nothing changes. I’m almost conditioned to only look west, to hone in on the same sliver above the horizon, so I accept that this night is a bust. Some great steps on my Garmin, but no decent pics.

Then I look over my shoulder, to the east, and my jaw drops.

The sun may have already disappeared below the horizon, but that hasn’t stopped it from putting on a bit of a light show - only this time in the high eastern sky.

I stand there, transfixed, as it dawns on me that I’ve literally never looked this way at this time. And it’s glorious. I regain my senses and start taking photos to remember what it feels like.

To be frank, the pixels don’t capture the full intensity - in my eyes or in my soul - but I still feel the need to share this one as a lesson to my future self to start looking in new directions, and to have the patience to keep looking long after everyone else would have already gone home.

I don’t do this often enough.

Don’t stand in the smushy sand where waves go to die.

Don’t feel the water crash into my ankles.

Don’t feel the wind on my face and in my ears.

Don’t smell the freshness of the open water.

Don’t listen to the screams of the birds as they fight the forces of nature and each other for survival.

Don’t close my eyes and just let my senses get smacked from all sides.

While it’s true that my photo archives and personal memories are filled with images like this - waves, sand, birds, whatever - it’s just as true that every time I’m here I get to see things I had never seen before.

So that’s what I’ll do. Keep coming back to places that bring me and mine joy. Keep standing in the smushy sand. Keep staring at waves through glass, hoping to see the familiar in new ways.

Beach. Life. What’s the difference, really?

Even rescuers need safe harbour

Shades of blue
Port Stanley, ON

Port Stanley’s Marine Rescue unit is housed in this lovely blue-clad building near the entrance to the village’s harbour.

While Lake Erie is the shallowest of the Great Lakes, it presents unique risks to anyone who ventures out on the waters - and the unit’s staff are rightly revered as the heroes they are.

It’s fitting that the place they call home protects them in the same way they so selflessly protect others.

A dragon breathes fire in the skies overhead.

And the hotter it burns, the sooner it fades.
