Lonely light
Courtyard from a sixth-floor balcony
Laval, QC, December 2006
This is another one of those images that haunts me. I love the way the light paints the stark, artificially-conceived landscape before it drops off toward the edges. I love the lines of the lamp standard. This is an image that sticks in my mind, and I hope it sticks in your mind, too.
Your turn: I believe any given photo has a message. With that in mind, does this image say anything to you?

Shades of grey. Stark, empty, timeless.....the end of a long day.
That darkness can be dispelled anywhere with enough light.
"If you're feeling lonely, you're not alone. And yet you are alone. So very alone."
God, that's gorgeous Carmi!
Sepia gives the perfect mood.
Hope you had a wonderful Christmas day.
It reminds me of a couple of things. A Robert Frost poem "I have been one acquainted with the night." Especially the line "I have stood still and heard the sound of feet." which refers to the echo of someone walking down the street at night.
It also looks a lot like a new etching I picked up at the Emily Carr School art sale. It's called "I only come out at night." It's by Thomas Watchorn.
Very cool photo
Probably semantics, but I'm not sure every photo has a 'message'....but I do think every photo evokes a feeling. This photo 'feels' cold to me. The starkness seems chilling. The somewhat barren look of the courtyard seems like a place where the cold wind would be really brisk. It just looks 'cold' to me.
Scene of the crime.
The picture IS haunting. Now, if there were the dark figure of a lone man or woman next to the lamp post under that light... that would be downright scary. Wait, a frame like that was in the opening of the Exorcist wasn't it?
reminds me of a joke:
I am walking to my car and I see a drunk bent over looking for something near the corner streetlamp. I ask him "hey Pal, what are you looking for?"
"I dropped my house keys", he replied.
"Let me help you find them, where abouts did you drop them?"
Over there somewhere, (he points off into the darkness)
"Then why the heck are you looking for them here?" I asked.
"Because the light is better over here"
It is sort of dull, but danger lurks around. Anything, ANYTHING might just pop into sight at ANY minute. Fear.
It looks like a scene out of a Harry Potter movie - I like the simplicity of the photo.
