Thematic Photographic 53 - Road

Kiss my asphalt
London, ON, March 2009

Now that we've paved paradise and put up a parking lot, we're left with little choice but to live with the landscape - or moonscape - that now exists.

I rather detest the vast expanses of pavement that define where most of us live. An urban geography dominated by roads is hot, people-unfriendly and not all that pretty to boot. Still, as much as I'd like to whine about the unnaturalness of it all, it won't change reality. So since we're stuck with roads here, there and everywhere, I thought we'd at least take a week or so to explore 'em with our cameras.

Are you in?

Your turn: Take any picture of any road. Post it on your blog and leave the link in a comment here. That's it! We'll be doing this all week long, so remember to try the veal. If you're new to Thematic Photographic, here's a bit of an overview:
  • Every Wednesday evening, at precisely 7 o'clock Eastern, I post a new Thematic Photographic entry.
  • Each entry has a unique theme. This week's is...road!
  • You post a similarly themed image over on your blog.
  • You paste a link to your entry in a comment here.
  • If you've already posted something that fits (on a blog, Facebook, MySpace, wherever) simply post the link to the existing entry. Old or new, all photos are welcome.
  • You may post as many photos or links as you wish. For the next week, I'll be supporting this theme with a related picture/posting each day. I encourage you to do the same. This is all about sharing, so feel free to share to your heart's content!
  • Please share this link with friends, too, and encourage them to join in. The more, the merrier.
  • And please accept my thanks for your enthusiasm. Your participation has made TP a true highlight for me each and every week.

Awesome photo Carmi! You really captured the alien nature (or un-nature?) of pavement with this one. Lit a little differently you could easily pass this off as the dark side of the moon or some other not-of-this-earth scene.

And of course you know a child of the Age of Aquarius is gonna dig the Joni reference. Groovy baby!

I found that most of the roads in my archives came from the same general vicinity. So I may have to go looking for more. But for starters, I offer up one of the more picturesque stretches of highway in the Old North State, the Blue Ridge Parkway:

I tend not to photograph roads, but I found some scenic view with roads in them, from both New Zealand and the UK

Thankfully not all roads are paved. This is one I regularly walk in autumn. It is hilly, twists and turns and the views are awesome.

I don't even want to guess what you did to take that photo, Carmi, but it's a great one. Surreal.

I'm going to have to work hard to come up with a "Road" photo since most of mine are taken around the water.

I have thought a great deal about your post yesterday about the Holocaust Museum shooting. I enjoy getting the "northern" perspective of our way of living (dying).

Highway Zits! :)

I have so many road photos and I don't know why. I think because I learned from YOU never to leave my camera behind. Some of the shots I love...winter roads complete with Deer ambling alongside...autumn roads etc.... However, the photo I picked was one that I took last summer and never knew why until I was prompted this week to rediscover it. It brought back my thoughts and my feelings behind the meaning of our Trans Canada Highway.
Hope you enjoy my thoughts as much as I enjoyed trying to find the words to capture them.

Carmi
that road photograph looks surreal. Here is my contribution for pavement: http://lightandvoices.blogspot.com/2009/06/thematic-photograph-53-road.html.

Recently I've been spending ( far to much) time almost face down on the road, taking some fab images.....and alarming folk generally.
But for this...it has to be My Current Favourite Road! It's a road. That's all. Like any other really. But it's teeming with variety and life....and all just out of the camera's viewinder.

This is a seriously cool photograph!

Mine is not so cool, but it does come with a quote from a Rush song, amidst an entire post quoting songs from the "Snakes and Arrows" CD.
