Simply draped

Covered window
London, ON, April 2007 [Click to enlarge]

Window coverings aren't often a topic of conversation. Sometimes, they're used to keep prying eyes out. Other times, they're shunted off to the side when we want to take in the world outside.

But when we were over at our friends' house one evening earlier this month, my eyes drifted over to the closed shades and I couldn't help but notice how the light played on the fabric's surface.

It wasn't a major moment by any stretch of the imagination. But I'm learning that photography isn't about the big moments anyway. Sometimes, it's enough to record how the light of a single lamp seems to gradually dissipate as it works its way across the varying surface of the drapes.

Simple, really.

Your turn: A simple, yet worthy-of-a-picture moment for you might be...?

Another good picture Carmi. How about a picture of a kid getting off the school bus at the end of the day?

Michele sent me.

I just got a bunny. I've found that I want to take pictures of him doing everything, eating, playing, snuggling. But the sweetest are when he is sleeping. And he sleeps a lot, so it isn't like it's a major moment either.

Michele sent me, have a good weekend.

There are definitely times when I wish I had a camera, or an interest in photography. Tonight, on the walk to the train, I saw a Boston Terrier waiting anxiously outside a bakery for his owner--standing on a green wooden bench, paws on the window, tail wagging furiously. He whimpered, and I felt bad for the little guy--but it was a classic image.

Wow, I hope they were good friends! Hehehe. Looks l ike suede fabric. I can just see you all in conversation, your wife realizes "uh, oh...Carmi is distracted....here we go!" I know, I know, it takes one to know one! :)

Nice shot. Love the tones...

The play of light and shade is lovely in this photo. I can see why you felt compelled to capture it.

It's hard to say what simple matters I would like to capture as I take pictures of things that catch my eye, but it usually involves light, texture and colour.

Lovely simple image Carmi, great lighting!

For me, ANY MOMENT, is worthy of a picture no matter how simple! There is beauty all around us in even the most basic of things. Photographing it can sometimes show us things we may never noticed about them!

Have a lovely weekend {{HUGS}}

The way the light plays across those curtains makes you want to touch them. You just know they're going to be all velvety soft and warm.
Thank you for sharing Carmi.

Here via Michele tonight.

This fabric begs to be touched... it "feels" very suede-like. The tactile nature of the picture and the light are very soothing.

Simple but meaningful? A candid shot of my now 21 year old daughter, sitting on a bench at the botanical garden... letting her eyes wander to far away lands, a short reprise from the pressure of college.

I like the diagonal spread of the lamp light, Carmi.

How about a photo of a house (or protion of one), just as the flowers come into bloom?

Oops, Michele sent me this time. Sorry.

water puddled on the bathroom floor....it always says to me that the kids must have had a good time in the bath.

Such a simple subject, yet it conveys so much texture and imagination. Great shot.

I like pictures of smiles.... just because they are infectious.

These photos capture peace and contentment and beauty all-in-one.

Love the curtains, Carmi. You can be my sibling anytime - I don't have any brothers, just my big sister. I am constantly "adopting" siblings. Since you are Canadian, you already fit the profile!

But, you'll have to provide some of my favorite Canadian treats (namely Ah, Caramels and Flaky pastries) first, lol. JUST kidding.

Now, on to yoru question. I am often enthralled by the soldiers on our post. Would love to stand around taking pictures of them all day. Just doing their thing. Living life. Training. Just BEING. But they frown upon that, you know - think you're weird and stuff. Wouldn't do for the bandmaster's wife to get arrested for taking unapproved photos, now would it?

Lately I've been taking photos of reflections in puddles--I posted a couple a few weeks ago and got several more. I like the way you take simple things and explore them. Here from Michele's this evening

Hi Carmi

I have not visited in a while, things have been out of control here but hopefully will be getting better. I just wanted to let you know that I took some shots at the hospital where my husband is at the moment with you and Anna in London in mind and dedicated them to you. Without your insight I would never have thought to look up or think that they would make a good photograph. It is on my blog for the 24 April, if I remember correctly.

I hope you are well and hope to be able to catch up on my backlog of blog surfing soon. I always enjoy your stories and pictures.

Keep well.

Lori

I posted one just today.
My beautiful white bleeding heart in the garden.
Soon, it will die back. It's loveliness is fleeting.
