The scene: Thursday, 10:43p.m., two London Police Service cruisers turn the corner into the subdivision and park in the bus stop cutout.

An officer hops out of the cruiser in back, then runs to other cruiser and jumps in on the passenger side. That vehicle then just as quickly pulls a u-turn, and squeals rubber as the lights go on and it disappears in the direction from which it came.

I'm walking the dog, and would normally go the opposite way, but curiosity draws me the toward the now-empty cruiser parked in a really unusual spot.

We'll probably never know the story why, and perhaps that's the way it should be. I share this picture as a reminder that they're out there 24/7/365 making sure folks like me can walk the dog in peace.

It's a persistent sacrifice that rarely gets acknowledged by everyday folks - and that's a shame. Because our first responders deserve more than pandemic-era cheerleading.

They deserve ongoing respect for heading toward trouble when the rest of us are heading away.
