50 years ago today, the SS Edmund Fitzgerald sank in a storm on Lake Superior, taking 29 souls to the bottom.

The mystery of why the largest ship on the Great Lakes was lost persists to this day, and when we stood by the windswept shore last year and watched the waves wash over the sand, it felt like Gitchi-Gami would never give up her secrets.

She’s hardly the only ship to be lost, in these waters - or in any waters, for that matter. But she’s the one who became embedded in our memories, who became the anthem of a nation, who continues to remind us that the lives we lead depend on the sacrifices of countless mariners in waters like these.

Maybe we just don’t see it. Maybe we should stand in places like this and feel the waves reach out to us from the mysterious depths.
