These leaves, captured deep in the shadowy woods, are battered and bruised by an environment explicitly determined to wipe them out. Whether it’s wind, rain, or last night’s curious mixture of sleet and hail, they wear their scars, yet still hang on with quiet defiance.
Also like Canadians, they stick together, shielding each other from constant abuse, turning themselves toward the life-giving light.
Eventually, they’ll lose their grip up here, and will tumble into the growing mess on the forest floor below.
Yet their story won’t end there, because soon enough they’ll break down still further and provide the ingredients for the next generation of leaves, already seeking life through the unseen roots below.
We’re as much part of this cycle outside the forest as we are within it, and anyone who doubts the power of a simple leaf hasn’t spent enough time in places like this.
