A rail line runs through it Kitchener, ON July 2012 |
This week's theme, weathered and worn, is going to be a fun one, as it'll challenge us to look back a bit. We're always so focused on what's newest, what's next and what's hot that we tend to forget about the things that we're leaving behind in the process.
Sometimes, in looking back, we see things that simply wouldn't be built today. Like this place. As I walked past this alley in downtown Kitchener, I stopped and stared for what seemed like an age. A rail spur right through an alley: how cool is that? Knowing nothing about this area, I wasn't sure what came first, but I was pretty sure today's zoning laws would never allow anything like this.
Which is too bad, because streetscapes like this are infinitely more fun to explore than your average strip mall. And they tell the stories of those who came before us far more effectively than the anonymous designs that now define our urban lives.
Your turn: 1) Find your camera. 2) Take a picture of something that's been around for a while, and looks it. 3) Post it to your blog/website (if you've already got something online, feel free to use that, too.) 4) Leave a comment here so folks know where to find it. 5) Visit other participants for more sharing and inspiration. 6) Repeat if you wish (we encourage it.) 7) Bring a friend along (we encourage that, too!) 8) Have fun. That's the entire point! 9) Click here if you're new to Thematic and would like additional background info.

You are definitely hitting on some colorful themes...
As always, here's mine:http://afreshstartwithkalei.blogspot.com/2012/09/tp-weathered-and-worn-211.html
My grandmama used to say that I was born with the soul of a 50-year-old, and I think she was right. I love old things. She was the first weathered beauty I welcomed in my heart. And books. And ancient trees. And old stories. And... well, you get the idea.
I loved this prompt. It nearly made me cry. I've been thinking about my grandmother a lot lately. Maybe because All Hallow's Eve is so near...
Here is my "Sage Exult"
