Taking a second look at a green bridge

I've been crossing this bridge for years, but always on a bike, always at speed, never taking the time to really appreciate it.

Now that I work barely half a block to the left of this shot, it's an easy lunchtime stroll, which is exactly what I'm up to on this grey, lonely day.

No one's around as I slowly walk the length of this no-cars-allowed span and admire the nearly century-old engineering. It's been lovingly maintained by the city, and up close it's easy to see what a treasure it is.

Some unknown craftsperson assembled these steel beams long before I was born. And others kept it strong and relevant over the decades since. It feels right to quietly admire the care they put into their work.

I'm not here for long, because the rest of the day awaits. But already I can sense I'll be back soon. Because slowing down to appreciate the details is good for the soul. And I'm sure this bridge is only one of many spots along the way that I've been ignoring for too long in the rush to keep up with life. Time to change that.
