A forlorn sign at the airport

I spotted this sign -"Lost Something?" - in our local airport, and it got me thinking.

The answer should be rather obvious: We all grapple with loss. It's a fundamental reality of life.

But you have to have something first in order to then lose it. Indeed, as our respective journeys play out, we accumulate stuff along the way. Hard goods. Experiences. Relationships. Whatever.

And inevitably, we'll lose some of these things - sometimes sooner, sometimes not. And despite the fact that we might think that makes us unique, it doesn't. Everyone loses. Everyone hurts to varying degrees. Everyone deals with it in their own way.

Perhaps that's something to keep in mind as we wind down the year - oops, decade - and reflect on where we've been, where we're headed, and how we'd like to get there.

A little more empathy along the way, for what others have lost and how they're dealing with it, might be a reasonable place to start.
