They're kind in ways many humans will never understand. Or deserve.
They revel in the simple things, as anyone who's played hours of fetch with a drool-covered ball would attest.
They're ridiculously loyal, as anyone who's ever come home to a hero's welcome would appreciate.
They're fiercely protective of their people. This one deliberately stands between her humans and strangers when we first meet. Her big-brother-dog Frasier did the same thing.
They always have room for more love. Calli will jump all over everyone she meets. But she goes especially bananas over a few of our closest friends. Dogs always "just know".
They're remarkably consistent. All those traits don't somehow disappear because they suddenly change their mind. This isn't high school, and they're not part of a fickle-membered clique. They're a part of you for life.
Mind you, this one could learn to be a little more modest when the camera is around, but unrefined edges and all, we love her more with each passing day.
To me, that feels like the basis for a better year, and more importantly a better way to squeeze more goodness out of every day, no matter what the calendar might say.
May all your days be as charmed as this little one's are, and may we all find ways to inject a little more of whatever it is that makes her tick into our lives.
Not a resolution. Just a recipe for life, and the way I'd like to live mine.
