Feel the heat London, ON October 2019 This photo originally shared on Instagram |
We’re coming up on a year since we moved into our lovingly rebuilt office, and not a day goes by that I don’t stop somewhere along the way and take in a detail that I somehow missed up until that very moment. Like this radiator that’s probably been here since before I was born - which should come as no surprise given this block of buildings dates back to the late 19th century.
I’m thankful that someone along the way decided to keep it around. Even though it isn’t connected to anything anymore, that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have a purpose in the middle of a fast-paced office environment. Indeed, it now serves to inspire us to slow down and reflect on what once was. To appreciate where we’ve come from, where we are, and what we do - as well as who laid the foundations before us, and the colleagues who now share our journey.
Yes, this radiator is a relic of a bygone era, and it no longer does what it was originally designed to do. But even relics have their place, and the concept of purpose is hardly rigid.
If this old radiator can serve a different role in a world that didn’t exist when it was first created, then perhaps we can, too.
