The grocery store at night - Part 1

Hyperbole by the fluorescent light

Pools of pure white light spill into the darkness of an otherwise deserted strip mall parking lot. It’s an oasis, of sorts, standing beacon-like on this desolate corner in east London.

I've been making mental notes for months to stop here. But every time I drive by, I'm rushing somewhere else. The list in my head grows longer by the day, as there's never enough time to capture the things that catch my eye and settle in my mind.

Tonight I decide to make the time, because five minutes one way or another won't throw the planet into another orbit. Tonight I pull over and park in the darkened corner of an empty lot, a bright, typically ignored beacon asking for a fleeting moment of attention.

It's just a supermarket, I tell myself. Hardly worthy of our attention, by the standards of most.

But you already know I follow different drummers. And what merits attention in my world doesn't necessarily align with what's popular. Or even normal.

We'll be hanging out at the corner of Oxford and Highbury for the next few days. Part of me hopes you'll join us.

Another part of me hopes, even more fervently, that you'll find your own desolate street corner, or ignored corner of the world, and find a way to tell its story, as well.
