City held hostage

A business model that makes no sense

London’s downtown core is filled with empty buildings, many of them plastered with signs begging someone, anyone, to rent them.

You’d think they’re devoid of economically viable human activity because of the pandemic. You’d think wrong, as I shot this in January, and scenes like this have defined the landscape for years.

At some point, we’ll emerge from this historic cacophony, and I imagine we’ll spend years thereafter blaming COVID for all that ails us.

But let’s be honest with ourselves: the planet was broken long before a certain virus decided to go on its first world tour.

And fixing it won’t be as straightforward as giving everyone a shot in the arm.
