They’re usually invisible or otherwise hard to spot, but wingtip vortices can easily flip other aircraft unlucky enough to fly through them.

But if the conditions are just right - the perfect plane, the perfect low-slow-heavy flight regime, and the perfect weather conditions - the sky ends up being painted something mesmerizing.

These particular examples were left behind by a Hawker Sea Fury, the last piston-engined fighter before the jet age, and a design known for leaving particularly strong vortices in its wake.

Dangerous things that are surprisingly beautiful. Hmm…
