Jammed redux
A couple of weeks ago, I took my camera out at the breakfast table and decided to explore the marmelade jar. The resulting post was entitled Jammed. (If you haven't seen it yet, feel free to click on the link. I'll wait here.)
I'm including another image from that series because I often run into a bit of a photographer's dilemma in that I simply can't decide which image from a given series is my favorite. This one stuck in my mind because of the light. It paints out over the curved surface of the jar's label in a way that reminds me why this has always been one of my comfort foods. The softness of the light is something I didn't plan for when I set up the picture: it just happened.
The label's details also invite further investigation. I will read anything I can get my hands on when I'm alone at the breakfast table. And when I run out of newspapers, magazines, geek trade papers and school memos, I'll pore over product labels, too. I'm weird that way, but I hope you've enjoyed this second glimpse at my early-morning world.
(As with every image on this site, click on the image to bring up the high-resolution version.)
Your turn: Morning rituals. Why? Do you have any of your own?

Morning ritual for me is how I get ready.. exactly the same way everyday :) Its an art :)
Love your insights, Carmi!
Checking my e-mail is one of the first things I do in the morning - and journalling. I like the background in this photo - the stripes (Venetian blinds?) seem to echo the lines in the label
Morning Rituals: Too Boring To Write Down! (lol)
But thanks for asking, Carmi...
I so much like this picture...A LOT going on in it and I like that!
Here from Michele's this A.M. And about to post a NEW Post with more "Views"...
Morning rituals: because I need a manageable way of easing myself into the day before I am, strictly speaking, awake.
I too read over breakfast and have been known to resort to product labels - although these days it's more often emails, blogs and a smattering of online news while I breakfast at my desk.
Morning rituals for me consist with fighting to get my contact lenses in! I've not had them long and it's still a bit of a battle sometimes!
My morning ritual is pretty much the same as always. A routine rut.
Love the way you make us see ordinary things in a new light.
Tumble out of bed and I stumble to the kitchen. Pour myself a cup of ambition, yawning, stretching, trying to come to life. . . Oh, wait, those are the lyrics to NINE TO FIVE. I stumble out of bed. Then I stumble back into bed. Snooze button no longer works, because I unplugged the clock altogether. Have staring contest with cat. Lament fact that he will stay in bed and I will go to work.
You didn't get in a jam with that picture.
Michele sent me here
I do, and thanks, Carmi (for real!) because they need an eval!
As kids, my brothers and I would read the cereal boxes in the morning, fighting over who gets which one, while Mother read the newspaper. Reading in the morning is still a practice of mine - it's likely the only part of my current routine to make it into the next one. (reads: change coming soon - I'll blog on my own about it though.)
Awesome photo, Carmi....love the background on the enlarged version...looks like sun streaming through blinds.
My morning ritual: Get that cup of coffee and sit on my screened lanai enjoying the sunshine, birds and being alive.
why do they list vitamin A if it does not have any ???
I absolutely love the way you turn ordinary things into beautiful pictures! Isn't it funny how we often don't notice the beauty just looking at things, but seeing a picture gives you a completely different view!
My morning routines are the most important in my day! It just sets me up for having a good day or a hectic day. My favorite part though, is after I've taken care of all my morning "chores", and I get the kids fed and off to school, when I can sit down with a tall cup of tea and my laptop!
Morning ritual? Have dinner slash breakfast and go to bed. Did I mention that I work nights?
We are just the same, Carmi, I read the labels too, and I will even read the ads in the paper of that is all that is left.
My routine is the same every morning: check email, make coffee, read paper while eating and then go back to check email.....not very exciting, is it?
First thing: Coffee......
Second thing: Start computer...
Third thing: More coffee.....
Fourth: Shower and dress.....
Fifth: More coffee...
And to think, I didn't like coffee until five years ago.
I have lots of morning rituals, but since I try to sleep through most of them, I really can't say what they are.
But I do love the background of your photo - looks like light through the venetian blinds. Very cool.
My morning ritual is to get the kids through their morning rituals and off to school. Sometimes a real challenge to say the least!
Has anyone ever told you that your picture makes you look a little like Joaquin Phoenix?
Michele sent me!
I actually like the softly focused venetian blind shadows. It's a great juxtaposition for the juice.
Morning rituals? One:
Setting the alarm ab hour before I have to get up just so I can slap the s-h-*-t out of the snooze button three or four times.
Here via Michele, amigo.

That's funny. I couldn't get to sleep right away last night and I started snapping pictures of a Pepsi can on my bedside table along with various items near at hand. Still life pics can be very interesting--or at least they seem so at the time.
Rituals? Not really. I don't even do bathroom things routinely. I try to shower frequently enough so that people don't run away--but that's about it. I usually don't eat or drink anything before going to work.. often don't even turn on a light and just dress in anything handy. Night is more the time for rituals for me.
Here from Michele again.
For many years the morning ritual revolved around getting a little girl ready for pre-school or school and getting to the hospital on time. I miss that.
I do not miss the day it was time to go and there she stood "nekkid" at the top of the stairs. That was the last day she got ready in her own bathroom. From then on the action moved downstairs to my room.
Coffee...
pretty strong with some amaretto flavouring.
;)
Hi Carmi,
I loved that picture.....and I also love orange marmalade. Beautiful work.
My mornings are very predictable, get up, let the dog out, feed her while making coffee, cook oatmeal for Mason and then check CNN.com and read my email. Boring.
I surfed over from Michele's, but it was time I came by anyway.
Have a great week.
~K!
I check email, news sites and the weather. Then it is off to the transformation room...aka bathroom. This is where I transform from the sleepy woman at the table sipping hot coffee with cream only (no sugar please)...and become my daytime office look.
besides the children.... i sit at my latop with coffee and try to catch a friend or two on IM to chat. Keeps me sane.
oh yes... i distinctly remember numerous occasions of reading the cereal box when i was little! i still do, of course!
The Queen said
"Oh!:
And went to
His Majesty:
"Talking of the butter for
The royal slice of bread,
Many people
Think that
Marmalade
Is nicer.
Would you like to try a little
Marmalade
Instead?"
-- A.A. Milne (as anyone who owns a Pooh beret probably knows).
I love marmalade. I hate mornings. But my ritual - even in what passes for winter hereabouts - is taking my first mug of coffee outside, and communing with the birds.
