On darkness, light, and loss

"It's so much darker when a light goes out than it would have been if it had never shone."
John Steinbeck, The Winter of Our Discontent
I can't imagine what it must be like to have never had...anything...to begin with. I'm okay with the losing-it part, largely because we essentially have no choice. But that doesn't mean I'll ever get used to it.

This life thing isn't so easy, after all.
