Where we stress over cauliflower

Grocery shopping in 2023 feels a lot like it did in 2022: expensive and frustrating.

And I’m one of the lucky ones: as much as I grumble, I’m one of those blessed souls who can still afford to feed my family.

And I still have the bandwidth to stop myself every once in a while so I can take in the stark loveliness of a perfectly laid out pile of cauliflower.

Not everyone can. And the disparity in the lives we live - simply because I was born in a certain time and place, and was lucky enough to have been surrounded by advantage and opportunity - breaks my heart.

If humanity can grow vegetables at scale and offer them up so artfully (among other things), then surely we can figure out better ways to ensure more haves and fewer have-nots.

Maybe that’s a reasonable goal for the coming year.
