In the ideal world, they don't. But this is the real world, and yesterday's news that a friend from high school had died confirmed just how unfair the real world can be.
I have no words to explain how a guy who's always looked out for others, who had carved out a tremendous reputation as a comedian and writer, who was on his way to New York to do even bigger things, can suddenly be removed from the earth. We can ask "why?" until we're blue in the face and the answers will never come.
I'm glad I got to see him when he came to town to perform. I'm glad our lives crossed when we were kids, and again as we segued into adulthood. I'm left thinking he had so much more to do.
I hugged my family a little tighter last night, and again when they woke up today. I'm thinking about everyone whose lives we touch, and am wondering if we're all doing enough to stay connected, to let them know they matter. Because they do. He did.
Damn.

I'm sorry Carmi. My heart goes out to you and his family.
yes...Ideal worlds would be nice, but not real.
I lost a dear friend not too long ago...makes you stop and look and think about what really matters. And yes- how you stay connected to one another.
hugs
my condolences...sometimes (a lot of time) life is unfair
Perhaps their passing is the point, that it's a reminder of how precious each day is. There must be some lesson in it, right?
My condolences on the passing of your friend.
Carmi, I'm so sorry - it's never easy but when it seems so surreal, it's even harder to process.
Hugs to you all!
I'm so very sorry about your friend. Your post reminded me of a benediction I heard. "Remember, life is short, and we have but little time to gladden the hearts of those who travel this way with us. Oh, be swift to love. Make haste to be kind."
So sorry for your loss. I lost a good but distant friend last week and even though we were not in touch regularly, there is still a hole in the world for me.
So sorry Carmi. Its so hard to loose those we love.
Thank you for the reminder to share ourselves with others and keep in touch with friends. Time is the unknown factor.
