16 members of the team died, and a country whose very identity often seems to revolve around hockey, particularly the long, dark journey through the minors to the big leagues, mourned them.
Jaskirat Sidhu was driving that truck. After pleading guilty to 16 counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death and 13 counts of dangerous operation of a vehicle causing bodily injury, he was sentenced to 8 years in prison, where he currently remains.
The story of how the families have engaged with him in the three years since serves as a poignant commentary on the benefits - and limits - of forgiveness.
It's not an easy story to read. But it's an important one.
