When hood ornaments ruled

I've got the entire world ahead of me

Once upon a time, hood ornaments were a thing.

Evolving safety rules have consigned them to the same historical dustbin where pop-up headlights now reside. Efficiency also helped doom them, as they’re not terribly good for aerodynamics.

But they still make hearts skip a beat, and take us back to a time before a more rational world started to rein in the designer’s pen.

Today’s engineering is obviously light-years removed from this 1940s-era example. We live in a golden age of reliability, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness, even if modern vehicles don’t quite move our souls as their ancestors once did.

I think it’s a reasonable tradeoff for most of us, especially when we just want to get the harvest in, or our families home.

Not going to lie, though: this one gave me goosebumps. You can almost imagine what it must have been like to design and craft this tiny piece of mobile sculpture.

The world may have moved on, but history still whispers to us if we care to listen.
