Wordless Wednesday - Meet Darwin

Say hello to my little friend
Deerfield Beach, FL, December 2008 [Click to enlarge]

I've always wanted a pet dolphin. I know the logistics of my wish are simply impossible for anyone short of Donald Trump to fulfill. And even if I could afford a tank big enough to hold one, my wife would likely - and rightfully - veto any adoption proceedings.

But seeing one amble past the beach just after sunrise is a blessing that's difficult to describe. We named him "Darwin" because it just sounded right. He hung around for a bit, playing in the distant water, almost asking for us to appreciate his presence. We did, and won't soon forget our chance encounter where one world ends and another begins. Safe travels, our mammalian friend.

Your turn: This photo supports the most recent Thematic Photographic theme, surprise. To share yours, please click here. Our next TP theme goes live tomorrow (Wednesday) at 7:00 p.m. Eastern. If you'd like to chew on next week's theme, it's simple.

No, really, that's it: simple.

This is beautiful Carmi!

I've missed some Thematic Photographics and will think about Simple...do some simple thinking. Perhaps I can find something.

Looks like the birds are circling expecting "Darwin" to feed them. Great shot of a beautiful sunrise. ;-)

I had a pet dolphin once, but it swam away.
I feel despondent, as if I'd lost my porpoise in life.

It's a beautiful photo, and must have been a beautiful moment.

The colors are just wonderful in that photo, Carmi. I love dolphins, too, and I hope someday to swim with them.

My son was out on a Sunfish sail boat at VA. Beach one year and a dolphin hung around the boat for anhour, playing and watching my boy. I like to think he was protecting him.

I forget that on the east coast the sun comes up over the water ... my first thought was "beautiful sunset"

Swimming with dolphins should be in everybody's bucket list.

Lovely Pic and post today, Carmi.
Dolphins accompany boats for fun.
You can sometimes swim with wild dolphins off of leeward Oahu beaches (Makua). aloha, friend

It is definitely a blessing to have witnessed the moment. Dolphin as pet? Possible?!

Dolphins are perhaps too intelligent to be good pets-
but friends, ok!

Lovely! I'd like a dolphin too, but I live 4 hours from the ocean.

Carmi,

You aren't alone in wishing you had a pet dolphin! The year I lived in FL, my favorite thing to do was go to beach early in the morning just to catch a glimpse of these beautiful creatures! This is a lovely shot and it brought back many happy memories for me, thank you!

Happy WW!

I've seen dolphin swim past...even play... in Virginia Beach, but never down here in Florida. Guess I don't get to the beach enough! Wonderful creatures these...

Walked right in here from one of your readers. I love dolphins and can't see them at the aquarium without starting to cry. How strange is that :-)

Fabulous sky .. and ocean .. and dolphin.

How is it you shoot pix in Deerfield Be? Wanna buy a condo there?

Darwin was the name of the dolphin on the short-lived TV series Seaquest DSV, which I'm now going to make myself a fan of on Facebook.

Beautiful carmi. It reminds me of when we used to like off the coast of rancho palos verdes. We could watch the whales, dolphins, flying fish. Thanks for the memories.

what a great surprise! I love this and lizzy the lizard. It is magical, isn't it when you run into these creatures unexpectedly.

There are few times I miss living in Florida, but dolphin shots will do it. My kids were beach fanatics. We'd stay a week at a time at my in-laws' condo on Melbourne Beach and I loved the dolphins. The sea turtles, too.
