Thematic Photographic 48 - Yellow

Simply the best (buy)
London, ON, March 2009

About this photo: We're kicking off Thematic Photographic's yellow week with a bit of stark color. Read on for more...
The scene: I'm out running errands with our daughter. Although I usually park in the furthest reaches of the parking lot to avoid inconsiderate folks who enjoy whacking adjacent vehicles with their doors, I've lucked into this most primo of primo spots right beside the front doors of the store. Dahlia celebrates this bizarre event as I stare at the front of the big box store from a decidedly odd perspective: up-close and through the windshield.

It's a very windy day. As we get out of the car, she looks up and realizes the store's sign is blowing in the wind. It's not a temporary vinyl sign, either: it's a full-sized, permanent Best Buy sign. It's not the most comforting thing to see the rather large panels flap ominously within their frame, but my daughter nevertheless suggests I snap the scene so we remember what it was like to stand there on a windy afternoon. Bless her artist's heart.

Your turn: This week's Thematic Photographic theme is yellow. I'm pretty jazzed, as it's the first time I've deliberately used color for a theme. If you're all sufficiently into it, we'll toss additional colors into the mix later on. Deal? Time to get shooting. If you're new to this photographic craziness, read on:
  • Every Wednesday evening, at precisely 7 o'clock Eastern, I post a new Thematic Photographic entry.
  • Each entry has a unique theme. This week's is...yellow!
  • You post a similarly themed image over on your blog.
  • You paste a link to your entry in a comment here.
  • If you've already posted something that fits (on a blog, Facebook, MySpace, wherever) simply post the link to the existing entry. Old or new, all photos are welcome.
  • You may post as many photos or links as you wish. For the next week, I'll be supporting this theme with a related picture/posting each day. I encourage you to do the same. This is all about sharing, so feel free to share to your heart's content!
  • Please share this link with friends, too, and encourage them to join in. The more, the merrier.
  • And please accept my thanks for your enthusiasm. Your participation has made TP a true highlight for me each and every week.

That Best Buy logo is practically iconic -- at least here. But I never thought of it as a photographic subject until this very minute. Nicely done!

I actually took the camera to work with me today and got a few yellow shots on the way home. But for my initial offering I'm going back a few months to the car show that gave me a whole week's worth of "Reflections". This shot didn't get in that mix, not because it wasn't reflective (everything at a car show is reflective except the pavement!) but because I ran out of days before I ran out of shots.

Hola Carmi1

Yellow is one of my colors of the moment. I just got a yellow scarf that is lighting up my life! For now, take a look at a post I did not too long ago about yellow.

Hmmmm hopefully I can find some yellow pictures. Really just wanted to say I checked out your San Francisco pictures on Flicker. You got a picture of one of those toilers on the corner. So did we. It was nice that I could recognize some of the locations like Union Square and the Ferry Building...at least I think it was the Ferry Building.

I would have liked to have seen a photo of your eyes when she said that. Though if they were yellow, I'd worry. :)

I'm a sucker for color-based memes, so I'm game for more. But it would also be fun to a multi-color or paisley or other pattern thing.

I avoid box stores. I think I've been in BB maybe three times ever. I actually didn't recognize your photograph immediately as BB until you said so; though it did look vaguely familiar.

Yellow usually means flowers to me. Daffodils would be the obvious choice for the season but this gorgeous lily begged to be shown. It is nicer when clicked to embiiggen.

GREAT photo Carmi! I was contemplating posting a store sign as well....thought about the caution signs along the road too. But, went with my bedside lamp....my source of light for reading.

That Best Buy sign reminds me of the colors of a bumble bee. What a unique idea. I took my camera outside today... between the tornado watches and the severe thunderstorm warnings.... and took advantage of the cloudy day. My brother had to go back to Vienna before the roses bloomed.. seems he misses them each year. So, this was a perfect excuse to post it, for your theme and for him as well.

Here is my yellow.

sounds like the wind nearly made it be Best Bye Bye sign.

I'll have to see if I already have something interestingly yellow -- or if I need to go on a hunt

I have many yellow flower photos - daffodils, roses, sunflowers - but I tried to find something else in my photo archives. (It's not really flower season in New Zealand, anyway)
My yellow collection is here

yellow? remember looking into here and staying, just watching the unfolding....

Love the bright graphic contrast between the letters and the background. It's a color scheme that's very commonly used in signage - that high contrast must be why. You just gave me another idea for a YELLOW photo!

I'm up with my yellow yellow yellow flower

Hello Carmi

Great shot of the Best Buy sign and wonderful story!

We were at J's Aunt Ruth's Tuesday. She has an amazing collection of Iris. One, in yellow, is my contribution.

I haven't taken part in TP in ages, but today I've posted several yellow photos. All of one kind of subject, it seems.

Hi Carmi

It was hectic last week and I just didn't get round to taking images of music... or even scanning old images of pop stars & musicians.

I remember some 1st year students at photographic college being sent out with one roll of Kodachrome to shoot ‘red’ images… a long time ago… So shooting ‘yellow’ is a good idea .. many thanks.

After posting images of bananas the week before last here are a few found yellow images from an old project on the River Stour in Dorset, England, taken in the autumn with a low almost wintery yellow sun.

I also took the subject literally (dangerous) and went out shooting with the results on a separate post: shooting yellow

Wow! You and your baby girl make Best Buy seem ... well, romantic (in the classical sense of the word, of course).

Lovely. Truly. Lovely.

Better late than never, I suppose. Here's my one entry. The cool thing is that yellow is my niece's favorite color. All the more fitting.

I have a sign shot of Kohl's that's very similar to your Best Buy. Love the angle.

Decided to jump in and give this a whirl. This is a shot of one of a field full of sunflowers near Sacramento, California that I took this past summer.

I had just purchased my first macro lens (60mm) and went out shooting with it. Tried for quite a while to get some decent shot of the bees that were swarmming everywhere.

This one was pretty successful I believe.
