Cool glass of water

Most of us were taught from an early age to not play with our food.

My memories of childhood are fuzzy at best, but I’m reasonably sure the no-play warning didn’t apply to glasses of water. Because in my convoluted world, water isn’t technically food, and I was always a challenging child looking for a loophole.

And apparently a challenging adult, too, from the looks of this photo.

The light was just so. The condensation had a texture all its own. And while the rest of my fam chatted away, I quietly composed the scene on my phone and snagged a few frames before anyone noticed what I was up to.

I didn’t end up playing with my food, which I’m guessing won’t make up for all the hell I raised at - and beyond - the dinner table as I was growing up.

But I got the photo I set out to get. And in the process managed to freeze-in-time the memory of a moment that mattered to my family.

If it meant breaking a meaningless rule from long ago along the way, I’m fine with it. Photography isn’t about following the rules, anyway.
