Watching the storms roll in

Water, light, and energy

It's 10:45 p.m. on a deserted street not far from home.

Severe thunderstorms have been rolling through the area all evening, and the dog and I are trying to catch a break before the next one hits. The horizon looks ominous, with fast-moving clouds barely covering the stars above, the rising winds creating their own music through the trees.

The clouds seem particularly reflective tonight, as if they sense that the world below needs an extra shot of light. So I stop to take in this unusual scene, and end up lingering on the grass for a while, feeling the wind through my hair and the gentle tug of the leash in my hand. Calli is perfectly happy to follow her nose at my feet as I stare up at the sky.

I probably shouldn't be standing in an open field while storms threaten to unload at any moment. But sometimes the planet feels a little different for reasons that may not be immediately apparent, and we owe it to ourselves to slow things down and appreciate the moment for what it is.

Indeed, when you open your eyes up amid the looming darkness, you never quite know what you'll discover.
