Shadowed layers
This earlier-posted image, entitled Lightning Strikes, elicited enough speculation that I thought I'd share other results from that shoot. My technique was simple: wade into the surf, point the lens down, and click away.
Aside from our kids, I've never worked with subject matter that moved so quickly and changed so dramatically from one moment to the next. Unlike most picture-taking expeditions, I went into this one with no clue how it would turn out.
When I reviewed the files afterward, I was amazed with the degree of variation. There's a magical world quite literally at our feet, and all we have to do is look down for a fleeting glimpse.
Your turn: What does this one remind you of?

nice! you found a great subject! :)
Hi Carmi, here from Michele's this eve. This reminded me of a marble effect tile.
I have been looking at maps...(which I love to do) and therefore this reminds me of the maps I saw this afternoon...islands. Here via Michele's today.
It reminds me of just what it is: frothy surf at the edge of the tide line, and also the bubbly froth of soapsuds left after cleaning and before rinsing the stainless steel sink.
P.S. blackberries and what you say about them do not bore us!
Michele didn't send me, I came on my own.
Hello again... here from Michele's.
This reminds me wading in the water with my brother hunting for sea shells. The frothy water left behind after a wave washed up. Makes me feel cozy. Thanks!
i spy with my eye
something that is the toe of a Carmi
Great picture as usual. Michele sent me.
To me, it looks a lot like snow on the siding of our barn.
this might be out there, but you asked... it reminds me of the pix of the earth that you would see from the space shuttle... except instead of the earth being blue... it's sand colored... and the froth are the clouds... am i spacey or what?
Hey Carmi...congrats on being the Site of the Day at Michele's. I love your pic in this post.
I think it looks like spit! LOL I'm horrible, Carmi, I know.
I hear you're site of the day at Michele's :)
hello, michele sent me :o)congratulations on the site of the day at michele's! you are definitely deserving of the honor.
i really like this picture for a couple of reasons: first, i like anything that has to do with the ocean, surf, or water in general. second, because you can look at this photo and see many different things: the surf pool OR maybe, like me, what appears to be an aerial or space view of some earth-like planet.
cool beans man!
Hey, Carmi. I haven't visted in awhile. It reminds me of puffs of smoke against dirt, actually. And, i found myself looking at the foam from the waves and noticing shapes, much like you do when you look at the clouds.
Loved this! Michele sent me--congrats on being site of the day!
ahh the beach....love the beach!
Hi From Michele!
chelle
Reminds me of a satellite view of the earth with clouds...only the "ocean" is brown!
Hey, Michelle sent me!
Congrats on being Michele's site of the day, she sent me your way today but I come on my own very often too! have a great day.
Hello, Michele sent me! Congrats on being SOTD!!
Lovely, lovely holidays.
Here from Michele's this time.
Love this Carmi...An AMAZING Photo!
I'd love to see the others, too...to see the variations..I'm amazed you were able to get anything at all that was in focus...You must have a very fast camera!!
And Congrats on Being The Site Of The Day, my dear Carmi!
Hi, Michele sent me. Interesting photo.
Well, Carmi. It's only appropriate that you're the site of the day. After all, you have so much practice being a celebrity and all! Rock on!
Love the photo. It's amazing how you can photograph rather everyday things and make them look so artistic. Writer, photographer...what else do you do so well?!
Michele sent me, but heck, I'm here all the time!
Congrats on being Michele's Site O'the Day!! No one is more deserving! :-)
Obviously, Michele sent me this morning, but I usually make it over on my own anyway. :-)
Happy Monday!
I back to tell you congrats on being Michele's site of the day! And I have to go back to the photo and see if I see your toe (as Dave did).
Hi...Michele sent me.
Unique photo. Reminds me of life in general...steps along a journey.
That's a really impressive shot!
Congrats on being the site of the Day! (Michele sent me!)
It looks like a pool of soapy water which was poured on a pavement drying up.
Amazing how you can turn ordinary shots into beautiful subjects.
Enjoy your week!
Seriously? The first thing I thought when I saw it was, "Frosted Molasses Cookie!" I'm here from Michele's and yes, I am food obsessed...LOL
Congrats on being Michele's site of the day!
Still reminds me of the beach. I need that memory today... I'm freezing! :)
Hello, Michele sent me.
It looks like a piece of marble. Cool picture.
Hi - Michele sent me today, but I've been here before.
Hi, Michele sent me.
I think the photo looks like icing on an oatmeal cookie.
Hi Carmi, congrats on being site of the day. Love that picture. Wish I had that kind of eye.
I do love the depth and texture of it!
Water is always amazing to view and take photographs of...and you captured the variety and magic of it!
Hello, Michele sent me!
Hi Carmi, I can feel the pull...going down the drain. Spreading Cheer! Via Michele's.
Another commenter mentioned this, but my first thought was that it looks a little like beer foam.
Michele sent me today.
Failure of imagination, or perhaps not enough coffee, but this looks to me like water over sand. (Sometimes an inkblot is just an inkblot?)
I'm here from Michele's today.
Hello, Michele sent me
This excercise reminds me of my wife's sandy beach photos. The surf left streeks of black silt in the pale sand. The patterns left behind were quite interesting.
See for yourself

It kind of reminds me of some pics of our planet...the land masses we see on the globe etc...
I knew what it was but was reminded of clouds hovering over the earth. Very nice either way.
Michele sends me today.
Seaweed, or algae. Great shot - the froth looks blue. And BTW Michele sent me.
Hi Carmi,
Michele sent me! Oooh, the beach! That reminds me of summer... isn't it time for the snow to go away for good yet?!
WooHoo Yer Michele's site o'the day!
So...Michele sent me this time!
Wow. I really like this one! I couldn't figure out what it was for the longest time.
I'd say Earth as viewed from space..
What a great idea! Since we are so at the beach all the time I'll have to try it. But not for a month or so... right now the water here is brrrrr, too cold.
Here from Michele.
Here today to say congratulations on being Michele's chosen site! But I come over often n my own. That is a really neaat photo.
Well it looks like snow on wood was my first impression until I looked a little closer and saw that it was beach water foam! I would have never thought to do that...you're so clever!
I'm here on my own, but it seems you're the site of the day! woohoo!
Oddly enough my first thought was whisps of snow on sand or dirt. Then I blinked and realized it was the surf. Interesting.
Oh my gosh. What an amazing few days you are having. That is so awesome that you have gotten so much press for your writing. NY times?? that is pretty freaking cool! I should haved tuned into Canada am this morning. So sad that i missed it. How did it all go? And now you are the site of the day!! You are the luckiest boy in the world (but also so deserving) congrats! here from michele's tonight.
I see plate tectonics on a much more evolved planet than Earth.
Great shot! At first I had no idea what I was looking at.
Accidental discovery is true art. That's why children are the true artists~,:^)
You might as well have taken a photo of the melting snow / half rain and the view of the sand in one of my flower beds. Nice photo.
Yes, children make you see the beauty and the story in this image.
You are a great dad with awesome insight.
That's funny, I did the same thing in the Bahamas...it just looked like glass and I wanted to see if I could capture it......of course I kept ending up with toes in mine!
