Plated

Stacked
Shanghai, China, May 2007 [Click to enlarge]

My eye is drawn to patterns like a child is drawn to a bowl of fudge-topped ice cream. When I saw these pristine plates in the restaurant of our hotel, I had to take a closer look. What really got me was how they were lit. The countertops were made of a translucent, brightly-backlit surface. I liked the resulting glow from below.

Your turn: Look really closely at these plates. Is all as it seemed when you first saw the image?

Until you said that they were plates, I thought (briefly of course) they were a pile of old vinyl records!!!

i love that you can find beauty, harmony, and symetry in the most simple things, and it is a true gift to be able to share it with others.

The last time I saw stacks like that they were gold charger plates belonging to my boss. We had used them for a banquet of about 900 people and the wait staff was supposed to remove them after the salad course. They forgot, and when we had to pack them up and take them back to the shop, they were covered in food residue and rapidly beginning to smell or mold. It was awful! So, this is not exactly a good image for me...LOL

The first thing that came to mind as the web page loaded was LP records. It wasn't until I looked at the picture for another second that I realized they are plates.

Back again, via Michele. Carmi, the Circle K is a convenience store, at least here, it is.

They do look like records. Thanks for visiting me and if you really do want to vote in the next presidential election despite your Canadian citizenship, come down to Chicago. If dead relatives and pets can vote, so can you!

Is the mystery in the color of the plates? I was wondering... are they white? Are they black?

I love that they look so dark! Very different from the stacks of plates we used to have at school for dinner (shudder)! The lighting of the shot is cool. I love that you notice these things and capture them.

Michele sent me by this time and we posted at the same time! :)

It reminds me of the stacks of 45s you used to see in juke boxes. Very nice.

Michele (and Connie) sent me,

We posted at the same time but you just pipped me to the post so Michele sent me here again!

I love the shades in this photo. They do look a lot like vinyl records :)

Actually I looked at your photo before your title, and it looked like a stack of plates to me. When I saw the title and looked at it again, I thought.. hmm, it could also be an articulated robot arm...

Here from Michele's!

Carmi... I'll always agree with you on that... you can't beat the thrilling energy and the live humor of that stage-musical. That said, Hairspray (the movie) comes closer than I thought it would. The music! :) Great message. Hope you and your family enjoy. And Michele too.

The color is what strikes me. Just looking at it makes me want a cup of hot chocolate...and it's 100 degrees outside!

I'm adding you to my favorites. I hope you don't mind. Here from Michele's again!

Looks like plates to me, Carmi.

Thanks for the compliment on my blog, even though my writing sucks.

The longer I look at the plates, the more they look like giant springs or some weird auto part...

Oh, and now I want ice cream. Dangit.

Here via Michele's tonight!

Hi, Carmi. Here from Michele's tonight. Interesting stacka plates. I was in the restaurant business for 17 years, so I've seen many a stack. I never would have thought to take a picture. You've got good eyes.

Nice! I thought they were poker chips. ;)

If you scroll down and don't look at the top of the plates, they definitely look like records.

And as for your reply on my blog. . . have you ever seen the Canadian movie WayDowntown? It's about a group of young professionals who make a bet to see who can go the longest without going outside, what with all the underground tunnels and such. But I think it took place in Calgary.
