Rumors are flying that Google is in talks to buy the YouTube video site. Last night, Michael Arrington posted the following on TechCrunch: Completely Unsubstantiated Google/YouTube Rumor.
But the Wall Street Journal is now reporting it (Google in talks to buy Web video site YouTube). And we know they're always right. Or so it seems.
Your turn: Let your creativity soar as you consider the possibilities. What would a GoogleTube (YouGoogle?) entity be able to accomplish? What would you call it?
But there's more: See this later-posted entry for a link to the podcast of a radio interview I did.

Well, for one thing, it would be called You Goob. (The three-year-old watches You Tube vids more than I do!)
Oh I can't top You Goob. LOL
Maybe Google buying it will make it work better with IE? :)

I doubt they'll change the name. When they bought Blogger, they didn't change that name. Google already has Google Video, so whatever they were going to 'accomplish' they could have done anyway. It'll be great to have better integration of video into blogs.
Let's be honest. Any combination between Google and YouTube will be named...Google. Any combination between Google and MySpace will be named...Google.
Color me bitter, but our company was formerly exploring some options with Company X, which produced both business and entertainment products. We were interested in incorporating their business products into our solution, but then Google showed up and boughty Company X. They bought them solely for the entertainment products. The business products have pretty much been discontinued.
Needless to say, I'm still a Google user, and I don't know that they've ascended into Microsoft Evil Empire status yet, but Google's primary emphasis now is on promoting the Google brand name. I wouldn't be surprised if Blogger is renamed Google Blogs within two years.
I have to confess, I've only just found YouTube, and I really don't know much about how it works. So I have no real opinion on this.
I enjoyed catching up with your blog - did a double take when you said the countryside was close to London, and then I realised that you meant London, Ontario, not London, England :)
Michele sent me.
I hate the fact that something so wonderfully grass roots would be taken over by ANYTHING! Look what happened to MySpace. These damn big companies keep ruining all the fun stuff!
Hope you have a great weekend, anyway, Carmi!
Tube of goo? I wish I knew how to work the whole video podcast thing. I don't thing I've ever gone to the site, just watch videos that bloggers have posted. I'm here from michele's.
Let's call it Toogle Gube. And Shephard is right, it WILL work better with IE and with Blogger and Picasa and every other Google site.
Michele sent me!
Here from Michele.
I think that "You Goob" takes the cake.
First, I didn't even know that Google had MySpace and I have a MySpace account. I guess I really AM blond!
Next, I agree that they'll call it Google or Google Tube, though I think Gooble or Toogle would be fun...
Finally, Michele did NOT send me - however, I've been playing and that always makes me need a Carmi fix, even if the players don't line up right...
Thank you for your comments on my blog - looking good is important; I just wish I was better at it! haha
I really don't know much about it. Certainly not enough to comment. I do however love to learn new information.
Michele says Hi!
GoogTube?!
Well considering Google Video hasn't been the success they were hoping it to be, maybe YouTube will replace it. Though I doubt they'll change the name. I'd want GooTube. Though that might carry some connotation that wouldn't appeal to the masses, so nevermind.
Oh and Michele sent me.
How 'bout Yoogle?
I'd heard circa UKP865m? We shall see. Google video still returns some surprisingly naff entries at the moment, presumably because they have filtered it heavily.
You Goob is a great name. Gooogling and gooobling?
Greetings from rashbre
Regarding integration with blogger et al, the current embed string they suggest seems to work fine (at least it does on my mac).
I guess that whole Google Video thing couldn't compete so they are just going to overtake the competition. That is a good strategy I guess. I'm hopelessly in the past and haven't ever used YouTube, so for the present it won't effect me at all, but it is always fun to know what is going on.
Michele sent me again.
For short and sweet names, I'd pick Gube. And yes, I know it's an aural pun.
What it will accomplish? Annoying firefox users everywhere? Having the commercially approved vids come up first. I'm all for capitalism, but Google is becoming Greedgle.
