Memories of Tom Hanks
Grand Bend, ON, July 2007
I can't think of the word "Wilson" without hearing Tom Hanks personify his pet volleyball in the film, Cast Away. It's one of those movie lines that seems to have embedded itself into popular culture.
So as I saw this volleyball net on the beach last summer, Mr. Hanks's voice once again bounced around my head. I took this picture for no other reason than to remember my little movie moment in a peaceful place by the water.
I also liked the color, but that's a story for another day.
Yeah, I'm strange that way.
Your turn: Memorable lines from movies you've seen. Or haven't seen.

How funny that you'd ask this question because I woke up this morning thinking of my favorite line from the movie 1969, which I saw years ago. "It's not over there, it's inside of us, or it doesn't exist at all."
I'd give you the context, but I like the quote standing on its own.
Thanks for the visit/comment the other day.
Ha! I'm the same way with the Wilson. As for favorite lines I have too many, but in short the two most quoted movies for me remain Princess Bride and Tommy Boy. I think it's the mark of an icon when you can repeat almost any line to a movie and know that the majority of people will pick it right up with you. Some movies just do that better than others.
Hugs,
Holly
I like the color and text in your picture, Carmi, and the net below adds a lot to the picture.
As for a quote, here's one that pertains to your line of work:
"He [the devil] will look attractive and he will be nice and helpful and he will get a job where he influences a great God-fearing nation and he will never do an evil thing... he will just bit by little bit lower standards where they are important. Just coax along flash over substance... Just a tiny bit. And he will talk about all of us really being salesmen. And he'll get all the great women."
Broadcast News had such great writing, Carmi. I loved it from beginning to end.
Oh, wow, too many to mention for me, of course. Movie quotes pop into my head constantly.
but I think my favorite, strangely, is from Home Alone. Mac orders a pizza, and it comes, and he says, "A plain cheese pizza. Just for me." And for some reason whenever I order a pizza I think of that. Sometimes I say it out loud. Because, like little Kevin McAllister, I don't really like toppings.
Strother Martin, in 'Cool Hand Luke' - "What we have here .. is a failure .. to communicate." A world wide mantra.
One of my favorite lines is from the movie The Nutty Professor (Eddie Murphy version)... "You'll walk over, but your limpin' back".
And from the Princess Bride "Wuv, twue wuv"
I've got way too many favorites from way too many movies and as Dori from Finding Nemo says "Just keep swimming..."
:-)
"Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn!"
The line that darn near cost us the viewing forever of "GONE WITH THE WIND".
Boy, would they be surprised at what one hears in the movies these days!!! Or sees for that matter.
How are you? I have been very bad about leaving comments lately - but, I have been reading your blog every day...just been a bit under the weather...and I hope to have some news to report tomorrow after seeing the doctor...
INterestingly, i posted a piece yesterday (entitled weary) while thinking about the scene in Bull Durham when Nuke Laloosh was strumming his guitar while sitting on the bus crooning to Try a Little Tenderness.........except he was singing "wholly" instead of weary........
That movie is LOADED with memorable lines...... the discussions on the pitcher's mound, the steamy scenes between Susan Sarandon and Kevin Costner.
Forrest Gump too........actually there are a lot of Hanks films with amazing dialogue and scenes.
The one that comes to mind didn't have any words........it was an opera piece. Do you remember..........the shot was of Hanks lost in the music in the middle of a party in Philadelphia. I can never watch that scene without weeping. It was so touchingly beautiful
"Here's looking at you, kid."
Casablanca is one of my favorite movies. There are a lot of good lines from it. Everything about that movie just works. It's a gem.
Your photo made me want to play volleyball. I played in high school, then I joined teams at the YMCA. I really love to play! I haven't played at all for about ten years now. I wonder if I could even serve the ball over the net now???
I watched this movie on the ferry from Alaska to Washington....(about five days!) not the movie you want to be watching while surrounded by water! But even more along the lines of Wilson....that is my maiden name! Great memories!
the first one that comes to mind is "I drink your milkshake" from There Will Be Blood.
Daniel Day Lewis is a mad genius!
