The tragedy of dogs who can't vote

It's the morning after the night before here in the Great White North, and all across this great land we awake with a king-sized, post-election-night hangover.

What does it all mean? The minority Liberal government. The rise of the let's-not-mince-words separatist Bloc Quebecois. The outright rejection of the barely-concealed-racist People's Party of Canada. A burgeoning #wexit movement. The inevitable parade of toppled cabinet ministers. The unmitigated nastiness and lies that persisted right through the victory and concession speeches and beyond.

So it's hard to tell what it all means, and we're only just beginning to unravel this massive - and massively knotted - ball of political twine. But Canadians tend to lean toward the glass-half-full side of the equation, and I'm no different. We've seen what ultra-polarization has done to the political and social landscape elsewhere, so I'm thankful that Canada held onto its humanity last night.

Which brings us to a dark, grey morning when the dog still needed to be walked, so off we went through the darkened, wet-leaf-covered neighborhood. Calli the Wonderschnauzer had no inkling of what played out last night, of course. She just wanted to follow her nose, safe in the knowledge that her doofus human-dad was firmly holding onto the other end of the leash.

So that's what she did. Because life goes on the morning after the night before. And so do we all.
