These ivories will be tickled no more

End of the musical road

This old piano has been sitting beside the road for a few days, a sad curiosity for our dog to sniff around as we walk past.

There's something particularly poignant about an instrument that's been discarded, especially something as central to the average home as a piano. Someone decided it wasn't worth fixing, keeping, fretting over. It'll never play another note again.

And in the gloomy murk of a cool evening in suburbia, its story silently ends, ignored by everyone except the curious puppy who has something new to play with - however temporary it may be.

Soon enough it'll be picked up one last time. Wherever it ends up, I quietly wish whoever was lucky enough to have - and to know how to play - this once pristine instrument holds onto the memories of the music that came from it, the connections that were made around it, and what it felt like to be surrounded by the things that matter most in life.

Music has that never-ending effect on us, even if the instruments that make it eventually wear out and end up forgotten beside a dark and lonely street.
