Sad news from the world of entertainment: James Doohan, who played Scotty on the iconic Star Trek series and subsequent films, has passed away.

CNN just ran the AP bulletin.

I didn't find out about this until about two hours ago...even though I only got to see TOS in re-runs, that's still the Trek I grew up with. Scotty was a big part of my childhood.

As an engineer, I have a special place in my heart for Scotty. He was one of the first fictional icons of the field. May Mr Doohan rest in peace.

I just heard. How sad! In college my friends and I used to make jokes about how to make people think you were a miracle worker...

I was a little sad about this. I grew up the child of hardcore trekkers (my dad and stepmom) so I was exposed from a young age. RIP, Scotty!
