11 years on...

Celebrating another bonus sunrise
Middlesex Centre, ON
August 5, 2024
This photo originally shared on Instagram

So today marks 11 years since I had a stroke.

I write and speak about it every now and then not because I have a particular desire to revisit the most frightening experience of my and my family’s life, but because I feel a responsibility to anyone else who’s gone through the same thing.

And every time I share my story, I get different reactions. To some folks, it’s a reminder of a now-familiar story. To others, it’s the first they’ve heard of it.

Whatever the case, it isn’t something I’m willing to let go. From the moment my brain decided to reboot itself, it became apparent that this was going to fundamentally reshape me. And while I initially bristled at the prospect of being known strictly through the lens of someone who had a serious illness, I eventually found my voice and accepted it.

People still stare at me, lingering over the “how are you?” part of the conversation whenever we reconnect. I’m used to them not quite believing me when I say I’m fine. I don’t take the conversation much further because I really do appreciate their concern, and I don’t want to add even more darkness to the discussion.

Truth is, though, I’m terrified. I worry about recurrence - the data suggests I’m at increased risk of stroke because I’ve already had one.

I also worry about a long list of other neurological funsies that lurk in the shadows. I fret every time I forget a factoid or misplace my keys, and wonder if it’s normal or if it’s a sign.

But strangely, I don’t regret it. Not that I’d have wished to be struck down, but rather perversely I think the experience made me better than I was. I hold onto small moments far more deliberately than I ever did. I’d like to think it helped me become more empathetic, hopefully a better husband, dad, writer, and human being.

Maybe I’m wrong. But I’m grateful for every bonus day I’ve gotten since August 5, 2013.

So this morning I got on the bike before sunrise and raced ahead of the rain into farm country. The wind in my face made me feel alive - something I didn’t really feel as acutely before that unforgettable day.

I’m hopeful that my experience might help other stroke victims continue to venture out, as well.

In that sense, we’re not victims at all.

Glory after the storm

Painted
London, ON
June 2024

Skywatchers know to head outside after the storm has passed.

Long after the rains and winds have died down, the sky still wears the chaos and uncertainty like a badge or a signature, as if it’s not yet ready to fully settle down.

Down here on the ground, then, we’re a lot like the heavens above. We, too, endure storms that soak us, that throw us off our game, that threaten our well-being, that strike fear into our hearts.

And we, too, need a little bit of time afterward to process our own storms, to settle, to work through the mess that was left behind.

All the leaves are virtually the same colour, yet differences in positioning and lighting make some of them look radically different from the others.

It’s broader lesson, perhaps, not only in optics and shading, but in the power of the environment that surrounds us to shift how we think and feel.

Context matters, apparently. In the forest and everywhere else.

Spiders only look frightening.

When they aren’t busy going after all the other bugs that creep us out, they’re building homes for themselves that are little short of engineering wonders.

We misunderstand these wonders of nature because their aesthetic convinces us so. Yet looks aren’t everything.

If only we took the time to understand the backstory of these enigmatic creatures.

If only we applied the same logic to people, too.

Wild grasses amid the traffic

Feel the wind
London, ON
May 2024
This photo originally shared on Instagram

The simple things are often the ones that intrigue us the most.

Like this stretch of overgrown grass blowing in the wind beside a four-lane arterial road, surrounded by one big box retail store after another, stitched together by endless parking lots.

I stare at the out-of-place greenery for a few minutes as it swishes one way, then another, under the late afternoon gusts. There isn’t much to the scene, yet I still can’t look away.

I don’t quite know why this weedy stretch of low-rent greenery can’t or won’t - or maybe it’s both - release its hold on me, but as my smartwatch beeps me out of my reverie and reminds me it’s time to head back to reality, I accept that it’s a question that doesn’t need to be answered. A little bit of mystery is entirely called for.

So I shoot a single frame and pack the camera away, my digital reminder to appreciate the simple moments safely stored on its memory card.

Dark clouds can foreshadow frightening times ahead.

Or do they?

Perhaps if we choose to look more closely we’ll spot the tiny flecks of reflected light in between the shadows.

Perhaps if we pull our heads out of the clouds and apply the same logic in the day-to-day, we’ll learn to look for the light first.

At the edge of an inland sea

Where waves die in the sand
Old Woman Bay, Lake Superior Provincial Park, ON
June 2023
This photo originally shared on Instagram

Right on the edge of a lake so large it’s often called an inland sea, endless waves roll up on a huge stretch of flat sand.

A curious mixture of lives seem to intersect in this transitional zone shaped by wind, water, and time. The only constant here is motion.

We stand amid the brisk late afternoon breeze in this place that is felt as much as it is seen. We’d rather stay here for hours, but the journey is long and time is short.

It’s time to get back on the road. The waves will continue to shape the resonant sands in our absence.

Red flowers in the checkout aisle

Pleasant surprise
London, ON
July 2024
This photo originally shared on Instagram

Flowers in a checkout aisle serve as a gentle reminder to slow life down and appreciate the little things that present themselves to us in the quietest of ways.

I’d hate to think what we’d miss if we just walked on by.

I’d hate to miss an opportunity to make complete strangers furrow their brows at the sight of a grown man going into photo-sesh mode as he waits for the cashier to finish up with the customer ahead of him.

Life is short. Take the shot. Wherever and whenever the inspiration presents itself.

That is alll.

Never leave your wingman

Together
London, ON
May 2024

I am not leaving my wingman or wingwoman.

It made sense for Tom Cruise’s Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, it makes sense for these gulls reaching for the horizon, and it makes sense for all of us no matter what we may be up to.

Flying together means more ways to block the wind and make the journey easier, more heads to put together when storms threaten, more eyes to scan the sky and identify risks.

It also means there’s always at least one someone nearby to laugh at anything you say. And, yes, I’d like to believe that birds are capable of humour.

We all are. In the sky, on the ground, anywhere.

Fly safe, friends.

Joyous zucchinis

Not-so-random pile of green
London, ON
July 2024
This photo originally shared on Instagram

Nature did this.

Pretty awesome, isn’t it?

It may seem odd that in the middle of a world wracked by challenging headlines, unchecked hatred, and rampant inequity I’d stop what I’m doing to stare at a zucchini pile in a local grocery store.

But hear me out. By virtually everyone’s definition, still-life vegetables are indeed admittedly trivial things to focus on, and relative to the worries of the day don’t seem worthy of much attention.

Yet it is their trivial nature that, frankly, makes them worthy. In the middle of a veritable storm of planetary chaos, some rather fetching veggies sit quietly waiting for someone to buy them and take them home.

They represent something of an oasis from the insanity as they offer up quiet moments of reflection and wonder before we rejoin the busyness that is daily life.

That’s what they are: quiet wonder. And whether we stop in to hang out with certain veggies, or fruits, or people, or places, or whatever, they serve as gentle reminders that they’re hardly worthy of our outright dismissal.

So, then, not trivial at all.

Vital, even, given all that surrounds us.

Grey steel under grey skies

On a grey autumn day so cold I can feel the wind slipping through the zipper of my jacket, I stand beneath a massive high-tension power line and listen to its soundtrack of ominous crackling and near-melodic thrums of air rushing through exposed steel.

This isn’t quite a sightseer’s paradise, but we don’t always get to choose times and locations, so we make do with what’s been presented to us.

Finding refuge during a global tech meltdown

It depends where you focus...
London, ON
July 2024
This photo originally shared on Instagram

It isn’t every day you wake up to a global technology outage that’s affecting everything from banks to government agencies to airlines.

While the massive event - touched off by a bad software update from CrowdStrike that caused machines running Microsoft Windows to crash - isn’t, thankfully, a cyberattack, the impact is nevertheless significant. Travellers are lined up at airports and border crossings, paycheques aren’t being paid, and hospital patients aren’t being treated. If that website or app you signed into this morning isn’t working, this is why.

It kind of reminds me of this scene I captured the other day at a dreary intersection in a dreary corner of town. Cracked, ground down, run over, depressing.

Yet I keep coming back to it. Why is that?

I guess it’s because the world is a challenging place, and a few minutes with a camera, where I do nothing more than play with light and visions and settings, is often all I need to cope with the craziness.

Every moment has a backstory. This is mine.

The things we see in the sky
London, ON
May 2024
This photo originally shared on Instagram

On a stormy night in southern Ontario, I spot a cloud formation that, to me, anyway, looks suspiciously like an F-16 just after takeoff.

I’m standing alone in an elementary school parking lot, so it’s not as if I can ask anyone if they can see it, too.

But the longer I stare at it, the more I appreciate that it doesn’t matter whether or not someone may or may not see a fighter jet in the clouds.

What matters is that they look to the skies in the first place.
