What happens when we forget?

Burn
Dollard-des-Ormeaux, QC
February 2024
This photo originally shared on Instagram

As I prepared to take the recycling bins out to the curb last night, I did something I’m rather ashamed of: I took the empty matza boxes and buried them under all the other paper products.

Then I stood alone in the garage and asked myself why, in 2024, was I afraid of being identified as a Jew?

See, it’s Holocaust Remembrance Day today. And if I remember anything from my Jewish upbringing, it’s two simple words: never again.

And for much of my life, I’ve subscribed to the notion that never again will something so monstrous be allowed to happen to any identifiable group.

Yet here I stand in an ordinary garage in an ordinary town in Canada, and I’m afraid of being singled out. Simply because of who I am.

Why is that? Why is Jew-hatred still a thing? Why is hatred still an acceptable pillar of curriculum in countless schools and communities? Why has this become normalized? Why haven’t we learned from history?

So many questions - and I have no answers for any of them as I carry the recycling box down the driveway, careful to ensure those pesky matza boxes don’t give me away, and don’t give anyone a reason to look more closely at me, my home, my family.

Never again? Not quite. Not now, and possibly never at all.

Walking the pink carpet

The one where she follows her nose
London, ON
May 2024
This photo originally shared on Instagram

Calli the Wonderschnauzer’s lovely brown eyes may not be able to discern as many colours as a human’s can, but that doesn’t mean she can’t sniff out some vibrant shades as she explores the neighbourhood.

There’s a tree just around the corner that drops a beautiful carpet of pink around this time every year. If it smells like heaven to us - and it does - then I’ve got to imagine her nose has a field day every time she gently pads her way across the Barbie-hued sidewalk.

The brilliant scene never lasts as long as we’d like, and indeed by the next morning the winds have thinned out the fallen petals, and those that remain have already begun to shrivel up.

I suppose it’s a sad thing to witness, the fading of what was once brilliant. But to the nose and eyes and imagination of a dog, it’s just another excuse to seek out new adventures.

When blooms litter the ground

Fallen
London, ON
June 2023
This photo originally shared on Instagram

We’re in that blink-and-you-miss-it time of year when the trees and bushes explode with vibrant blooms, only to shed their brilliance before most of us have a chance to appreciate the show.

Which leaves us with a choice: either sigh wearily and get on with our day, or crouch down and take a closer look at what’s left before time and winds whip them into oblivion.

So that’s what I do on this gently sunny Saturday morning as Calli the Wonderschnauzer patiently sniffs the grass nearby. The two of us have evolved a bit of a routine around dog walks and spontaneous photography, and I often forget to thank her for giving me a reason to get out with a lens in the first place.

As I compose this moment down at my feet, I ponder how temporary it is, and how a simple bloom from a nearby tree deserves to be the centre of attention before it disappears forever. Come to think of it, we all do.

You get a duck.

And…

Seriously, whatever your opinions may be on Jeeps - I love them dearly - it’s impossible not to be inspired by the sense of community among owners that results in complete strangers sharing friendly hand gestures with each other and randomly planting ducks on each other’s vehicles.

That word: community. If only we could all practice more of it, regardless of what we may drive.

Or even if we don’t drive at all.

The Lachine Canal comes back to life

Stories in brick and steel
Montreal, QC
September 2023
This photo originally shared on Instagram

It’s been decades since I lived in Montreal and cycled alongside the Lachine Canal.

As I was commuting to work, I didn’t have the opportunity to take in the history of this place, to appreciate the century-plus of history oozing from giant relics of a vanished industrial era.

Yet as I silently cruised between water and crumbling brick, I wished for a renaissance, that one day I’d return here and the area would be home to a new generation. I hoped future cyclists would have more reasons to stop - and fewer reasons to fear the rusty neglect that had come to define this place.

When we visited last year, I was able to walk around the once-abandoned factories, now lovingly rebuilt as homes and offices. Cyclists still whizzed past as they moved from here to there, but now there was a reason - ample reasons, actually - for many of them to stop along the way and lay down some roots.

For much of my life, this had been a city that bulldozed its history in the misguided pursuit of progress and future. What we ended up with was anything but, and I always worried the canal zone would similarly fall victim to this shortsighted urban planning narrative.

Thankfully in my absence, at least a few lessons seem to have been learned. I’ll have to bring my bike along when we next return. I’ll have a whole lot of reasons to slow down and enjoy the ride.

Long after we’ve had our final class, written our last exam, and moved out into the so-called real world, I’m guessing memories like this one remain indelibly imprinted in all of us.

In this scene, I’m running an errand with our daughter as she goes through the final steps of wrapping things up before she graduates. And as we walk through this corridor in the middle of her graphic design faculty, I feel the need to stop and remember the space.

Because soon enough we all go out into the world and apply everything we’ve learned in places like this.

And as much as the doors are always open for a return visit, life often seems to have other plans.

At an eerily silent intersection in the middle of a sleepy town, I stand beside the red brick and struggle to take in the myriad stories playing out in all directions.

From the clutter just inside the craft beer store window to the reflections in the window to the streetscape to the left, it’s a place where lives get lived and memories get made.

Except they tend to whisper here more than they shout. Which is as it should be in this picture-perfect spot in the middle of farm country, where time moves at its own pace, and history unfolds according to its own rules.

Calli the Wonderschnauzer is lying in her favourite spot, a corner of the area rug in our living room.

It’s where she’ll take her post-morning-walk treat, carefully prop herself down on the white rectangle, and enjoy her greenie as only she can.

We’re all creatures of habit, and this tiny ball of joyous energy is no exception. By instinct, she’s decided this singular spot is the very centre of her world, where she knows she’s surrounded by her family, where she is absolutely safe, and limitlessly loved.

In other words, it’s home to her.

Why yes, I do repeat myself. Often.

Look in any window
Montreal, QC
September 2023
This photo originally shared on Instagram

I take a lot of photos of the same thing.

Exhibit A: this angled view of 1 Place Ville Marie, a followup to yesterday’s impressionist-reflective shot of the same building.

Why I do this is rooted deep in my childhood, as I took my first steps as a photographer. In the pre-digital era, every photo was precious. So I might have grabbed a frame or two of a sight like this before calling it a day and packing the camera away.

Inevitably, I’d get home and develop the film, only to realize it wasn’t what I intended. Maybe I botched the exposure. Or the composition. Or the focus. Or I thought of another angle. I’d be left with a feeling of having missed out on telling the full story.

In today’s digital age, I can capture as many images as my memory card and battery will allow. So I’ll stand there and think of all sorts of ways to remember a place or a thing or a moment. I’ll give myself the time to ponder the possibilities, to brainstorm, to dream a little.

And as thoughts pop into my head and I try to realize them with the shutter, it often dawns on me that the photo isn’t always the mission. They’re just reminders of a moment in time where nothing else matters, where I get to put the planet on pause and just take in the experience of being there, then.

And on any other day, I could come back to this very same place and stare at the very same thing, and come up with a completely different experience in my mind of what it felt like to be there.

And every photo might ostensibly be of the same building. But it would tell a very different story.

And so I continue to return to places like this. Because there’s always another story to tell, and another moment to remember.

Impressionism and architecture

Hometown funhouse
Montreal, QC
September 2023
This photo originally shared on Instagram

When we were in Montreal last summer, I managed to grab a bit of time for a photowalk around the downtown core. It had been decades since we moved away, but my wife and I were both born and raised here, and we spent years studying and working in the core.

As I wandered streets that unlocked long-dormant memories, I caught sight of Place Ville Marie - well, specifically, the main 1 PVM tower - whose white cruciform design has long defined this city’s skyline. The iconic building silently drew me toward it, and soon enough I was just a few blocks away, staring at its shimmering, ruler-straight surfaces.

I stood on a crumbling sidewalk for a while as I pondered how to best remember the moment. I’m weird like that, always thinking about the kinds of photos to accompany experiences I’ll want to revisit later.

Largely because of the challenges of shooting enormous buildings from crowded streets, it was difficult to compose directly. So while I churned some alternatives, I leaned against a wall and found myself staring at a rather wild-looking reflection.

It has a carnival funhouse kind of vibe, where realism takes a firm back seat in favour of something a little - okay, a lot - more cartoonish.

I’m strangely comfortable with the result, as it reflects (sorry) the realities of real-world photography; namely that none of this is ever about capturing reality at all. Rather, it’s about remembering what it felt like to be in the moment.

And if it looks a little weird in the process, well, that’s kinda the way the process is supposed to work.

More to come.

This photo originally shared on Instagram

In the ideal world, we’ll always start with dessert.

That way, even if we get so full that we can’t continue, we’ll at least have had something sweet.

That way, we’ll have made a memory of something we enjoy, which hopefully will colour and shape all the other memories that we make next.

Because life is too short to miss out on the good stuff.

So we make little reminders to ourselves to find our way back to the things that bring us joy.

Just one photo. But so many lessons.

We have to look at, or through, or into, the correct window.

We have to wait for the right moment.

We have to understand the context of the thing before we can understand the thing itself.

We have to be prepared to look in the opposite direction.

We have to be willing to change our position. Often multiple times.

We have to keep returning to the places we’ve been before.

We have to be open to seeing the familiar in new ways.

Thank you for attending my TED talk.

Thornhill, ON
April 2024
This photo originally shared on Instagram

On a grand grocery-getting adventure to the Big City to the East with my most favourite human ever, I come across a stranger selecting the perfect jar of herring.

I’m mesmerized by the scene as he slowly zeroes in on the display case and carefully scans his options.

I’m not much of a herring fan, but I appreciate that my tastes are far from universal. This is a serious choice for him, and he’s taking his time.

I quietly watch from afar as he settles on one, places it in his cart, and moves on. He never knew I was there, never knew I was watching, will likely never know his story is being told here.

The anonymity is deliberate. Because he could be any one of us, looking for whatever it is that touches our taste buds. Or souls.

Most of the time, we do so without an audience. Sometimes, though, I like to imagine that exceptions can be made.

Either way, I hope he enjoyed his find. I hope everyone here found what they were looking for.

What Po saw

What can you see up there?
London, ON
April 2024
This photo originally shared on Instagram

Here’s what Po was staring at on Sunday night. I’m guessing the flaring light from the sun slipping beneath the horizon jumped out at her.

I get it: logic dictates that a stuffed animal can’t appreciate a sunset. Or anything else, for that matter.

But no one ever said every moment needed to be dictated by logic. Perhaps it’s just as reasonable to stand quietly and feel the wonder of starlight brilliantly piercing the late-evening atmosphere. Perhaps moments like this should be felt rather than explained.

So I’ll continue to tote this tattered stuffie with me whenever I head out on random adventures. I’ll continue to imagine that she has a semblance of a soul. I’ll continue to seek moments of wonder through a tiny icon of our children’s childhood, a faded red relic of their upbringing that stays with me to this day.

Maybe Po can’t appreciate all of this. But I most certainly can.

Taking a stuffie to watch the sunset

Finding comfort in the light
London, ON
April 2024
This photo originally shared on Instagram

Po the Teletubby wanted to see the sunset last night, so who was I to say no?

Off we went to the park to see what we could see.

The angles when we got there weren’t working in our favour. A cloud bank had moved in, with only a tiny sliver of glowing colour peeking out from behind the thickest part of the treeline.

So we walked to the other side of the park, and just like that we were back in business.

Soon enough the skies began to fade, but not before I snagged this test shot of my favourite stuffie taking in the scene.

While I’ve always appreciated the profound power of a simple change in perspective, I truly felt it last night as I realized the moment just wasn’t working out, so we went for a little walk.

I suppose I should listen to the smallest Teletubby more often.

Just go with the flow

Water, time, and light
London, ON
November 2023
This photo originally shared on Instagram

If Planet Earth seems a little turbulent these days, you’re not alone.

The skies overhead have been rain-filled, tinged with violent thunder and lightning, whipped by raging winds.

All this has fed the watershed below. The waters are now higher than they’ve been in recent memory, and they make a heck of a lot of noise as they rush chaotically downstream toward destinations often unknown.

At least that’s how it seems as I stand along the banks of that now-dangerous river.

But I’m guessing if I stand here long enough, a number of things might happen.

The storms will gradually fade into the distance. The skies will slowly clear. The sun will emerge once more. The winds will ease off. The waters will slow down and drop, eventually receding to a gentle burble. The birds will resume singing their songs.

It’ll remind us that everything is cyclical, that no turbulence lasts forever, that brighter skies are always out there, somewhere.

We just have to be a little patient. We just have to be a little hopeful.

What are they? Who tells them? Are they happy? Sad? Somewhere in between?

From the sidewalk across the street, peering through glass, none of these questions can be answered. From the outside looking in, we’ll never really know.

Which is perhaps as it should be. Not every question needs an answer. Not every mystery needs to be solved. Not every story needs an audience wider than those whose lives it touches.
